Traits

Permanently destroying Tharizdun. While Tharizdun is in the cyst form, 100 radiant damage applied in a single round will delay his progress toward completing the cocoon by one round. If this is continued for three consecutive rounds, the cocoon unravels and Tharizdun continues to implode inward until he vanishes into nothing.

Legendary Resistance (3/Day). If the Tharizdun fails a saving throw, it can choose to succeed instead.

Magic Resistance. The Tharizdun has advantage on saving throws against spells and other magical effects.

Actions

Great Sword. Melee Weapon Attack: +43 to hit, reach 10 ft., one target. Hit: 21 (4d6 + 10) piercing damage plus 10 ongoing cold damage and target is slowed and weakened (save ends). On critical, bonus +4d6 damage, and the target is encased in ice, replacing above ongoing effect with 20 ongoing cold damage and target immobilized and stunned (save ends all three).

Ebon Ray. The devil titan unleashes a 20ft wide beam of concentrated Dark Cold Energy from its mouth in a 240 ft line. All creatures in this line must succeed a Dex Save of 41 or take 3d8 + 10 Psychic damage plus 10 ongoing cold damage and target is slowed and weakened (save ends all three). On critical, bonus +3d8 Psychic damage, and the target is encased in ice, replacing above ongoing effect with 20 ongoing cold damage and target immobilized and stunned (save ends all three).

A Blast of Utter Cold. The Black Avatar purges itself of built up unnatural cold energy. All creatures within 30 ft must succeed a Constitution save of 38, or take 6d6 Psychic damage plus 20 ongoing cold damage and are pushed away 30 ft. On a miss, 3d6 damage plus 10 ongoing cold damage.

Wall of Darkness. The Titan raises a hand and a wall of blisteringly cold darkness rips from the Abyss. Creates a barrier 15 ft wide, 40 ft tall barrier 30 ft away from The Black Avatar. Passing through the barrier causes 10 cold damage. Wall persists for 3 rounds or until it takes 20 radiant damage.

Three Forms of Evil (Recharge 6). Thardizun heals 333 hit points and immediately splits into his Red, Green, and Blue avatar forms (see accompanying stats). Thardizun may remain in these forms for 3 rounds or until one is reduced to 0 hit points, at which point he reassembles in his black avatar form as an immediate reaction action in the space of one the remaining avatars.

Reactions

Black Cyst. (When reduced to zero hit points): Tharizdun implodes into a black sucking hole only 10 ft across, which quickly forms a whirling vortex around it. The Vortex immediately makes an attack to any creature within 15 ft of the black hole.

Whirling Vortex. No save 6d6 Psychic damage plus 33 cold damage and pull target 5 ft
The vortex remains for 6 rounds while Tharizdun weaves a protective cocoon of darkness around his damaged soul. At the end of 6 rounds, any creature foolish enough to remain in the thickening weave is drawn into the cyst and is lost forever.

Legendary Actions

The Black Titan can take 3 legendary actions, choosing from the options below. Only one legendary action option can be used at a time and only at the end of another creature's turn. The Black Titan regains spent legendary actions at the start of its turn.

Attack. The Black Titan makes one Great Sword attack or Ebon Ray attack.

Move. The Black Titan moves its speed.

Howling Purple Chaos (Costs 3 Actions). Tharizdun moves 160 ft and makes a Great Sword attack or an Ebon Ray attack on each square he passes through or which is within 10 ft to his path. If Tharizdun is in his Black Avatar form, he immediately recharges his Three Forms of Evil power. If Tharizdun is in the three forms of evil, he immediately reforms as the Black Avatar and heals 333hp.

Description

Appears as a frail-looking and timeless man with long sulfurous hair that drapes over a void. Its armor is made from crude, ever-shifting leather. Its movements are lazy and weak looking, dragging by its side a mighty greatsword.

Tharizdun is the single most mythic villain in the game. He's supposed to be nearly a match for all the good gods combined, and he's supposed to be all the forms of evil combined into a single being.

First off, Tharizdun is a triplicate god - hence the use of triangles, the sacred numbers 3 and 333, the organization of his worshipers into triads and the other repeating aspects of 3 in his worship and sphere of power. He appears in three forms united as one. Tharizdun should have the power to split his main Black Avatar form into three avatars: red, blue, and green representing Thardizun in his roles as the universal destroyer and representing the three aspects of evil united into one (Chaotic Evil, Lawful Evil, and Neutral Evil). In this form, he would then act three times in a turn (hence evening up the action economy).

Keeping all of this in mind, even in this form, Tharizdun should be weakened significantly prior to this fight. Perhaps having already been defeated and is using this form to flee into the Abyss.

Tharizdun is mentioned in the Player's Handbook for this edition (2014). He is listed as an example Pact Patron for warlocks who make a Pact with a Great Old One and is later listed in Appendix B: Gods of the Multiverse under the Greyhawk pantheon as Tharizdun, god of eternal darkness, CE, with the Trickery Domain and either a dark spiral or inverted ziggurat as his holy symbols. Tharizdun is also mentioned in the Dungeon Master's Guide for this edition (2014), this time listed as a member of the pantheon of the Dawn War Deities for the Nentir Vale setting and is listed as Tharizdun, god of madness, CE, with the Trickery Domain and a Jagged counter-clockwise spiral is listed as his holy symbol. Tharizdun is also listed as one of the elder evils in Mordenkainen's Tome of Foes.

Tharizdun was described in Dragon #294 as a pitch-black, roiling, amorphous form. As the Dark God, he is described as an incorporeal wraithform, black and faceless. Gary Gygax described Tharizdun as a "primordial deity, that of matter at rest and decay of energy, viz. entropy."[20]

Tharizdun has been depicted on the cover of Gygax's Gord the Rogue novel Come Endless Darkness as a huge, bald, humanoid man, with claws, greenish-black skin, and pointed ears. Gygax said that in the Gord novels, "the worst and most terrible of Tharizdun's forms could come into full power and attack".[20]

Tharizdun's "free" holy symbol is a "black sun with variegated rays". His second holy symbol of an inverted ziggurat indicates that the work of those who bound him would be overturned, according to Gygax.[20]

Other aspects
Tharizdun is sometimes worshiped as an entity called the Elder Elemental Eye (a being similar to Ghaunadaur), but few of these worshipers recognize the two as being the same entity. Gygax himself indicated that the two creatures were separate beings.[20] The Elder Elemental God is described as a huge, mottled, tentacled being, or as a pillar of vast elemental force with a body of burning magma, radiating steam.
