Traits

Aura of Steal Breath. Each creature that starts its turn within 10 feet of the bonedust skeleton must make a DC 13 Constitution saving throw or feel as if their breath is being stolen away. On a failed save, the creature is unable to speak, cast spells with verbal components, or use breath-based abilities until the start of its next turn. Additionally, creatures in the area have disadvantage on death saving throws.

Unusual Nature. The bonedust skeleton doesn't require air, food, drink, or sleep.

Actions

Multiattack (Solid Form Only). The bonedust skeleton makes two Claw or Boneshard attacks in any combination.

Claw (Solid Form Only). Melee Weapon Attack: +5 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 10 (2d6 + 3) slashing damage.

Boneshard (Solid Form Only). Ranged Weapon Attack: +5 to hit, range 60 ft., one target. Hit: 8 (2d4 + 3) piercing damage.

Life Drain (Dust Form Only). Melee Weapon Attack: +5 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 17 (4d6 + 3) necrotic damage. If the target is a creature, it must succeed on a DC 13 Constitution saving throw, or its hit point maximum is reduced by an amount equal to the damage taken. This reduction lasts until the target finishes a long rest. The target dies if its hit point maximum is reduced to 0.

Bonus Actions

Bone Shifting. The bonedust skeleton can transform its body into a Medium cloud of bonedust, or back into its solid form.

While dust form, the bonedust skeleton is weightless, has a flying speed of 30 feet, can hover, and can enter a hostile creature’s space and stop there. In addition, if air can pass through a space, the dust can do so without squeezing.

Description

"As you approach the bonedust skeleton, you are met with a haunting sight. Its form is ethereal, comprised of swirling bone dust held together by a dark and malevolent energy. The skeletal figure seems to constantly shift and dissipate, as if defying the boundaries of its own existence. Within the whirlwind of bone particles, you catch glimpses of jagged, razor-sharp shards that serve as its limbs and weapons. It exudes an aura of chilling cold, as if drawing the life force from the air around it."

Unique Form.

The Bonedust Skeleton is a peculiar undead creature born from a unique necromantic ritual. Instead of a solid skeletal structure, its bones have been reduced to fine, powdery dust. This unusual transformation grants the Bonedust Skeleton a mysterious advantage, as it can collapse into a cloud of bone particles and reform at will. The motes of bone swirl and dance, forming a vague humanoid shape that is as unsettling as it is ethereal. Its ephemeral nature makes it resistant to physical attacks, as weapons pass harmlessly through its bone-dust form. Only through the use of magic or blessed weaponry can the Bonedust Skeleton be truly vanquished. This enigmatic creature floats silently through the air, leaving a trail of faint bone dust in its wake.

Necromantic Creation.

The creation of a Bonedust Skeleton is shrouded in mystery and dark rituals. Legends speak of ancient necromancers who sought to transcend the limitations of conventional undeath, experimenting with forbidden magics to achieve a new form of skeletal existence. Through their unholy endeavors, they discovered the secret to disintegrating bones into an ethereal powder. These lost arts allowed the necromancers to bind the bone dust with malevolent enchantments, granting the Bonedust Skeleton an unsettling array of abilities. The dust that comprises their form carries with it a spectral chill, causing the air around them to grow cold. They can unleash swirling gusts of bone dust, choking and blinding their enemies, while their touch can drain the life force from living creatures.
