Legendary Resistance (3/Day). If Basarana fails a saving throw, she can choose to succeed instead.
Rejuvenation. If Basarana is killed while her grove stands, she gains a new body in 1d10 days, regaining all its hit points and becoming active again. The new body appears deep within the heart of Basarana's Grove.
Regeneration. Basarana regains 20 hit points at the start of its turn if it has at least 1 hit point. If Basarana takes radiant or fire damage, this trait doesn’t function at the start of Basarana's next turn.
Magic Resistance. Basarana has advantage on saving throws against spells and other magical effects.
Spellcasting. Basarana has the following spells using Wisdom as the spellcasting ability (save DC 17):
At will: druidcraft
3/day each: detect magic, detect thoughts, fog cloud, misty step, pass without trace
1/day each: antilife shell, cloudkill, dream, speak with plants, hallucinatory terrain
Multiattack. Basarana makes three attacks, only one of which can be a sap life attack.
Root Strike. Melee Weapon Attack: +7 to hit, reach 15 ft., one creature. Hit: 9 (2d8) bludgeoning damage, and the target must succeed on a DC 17 Strength saving throw or be restrained for 1 minute. As an action, a creature can try to free itself or another creature within its reach, doing so with a successful DC 17 Strength (Athletics) check.
Sap Life. Melee Weapon Attack: +7 to hit, reach 5 ft., one willing creature, or a creature that is grappled, incapacitated, or restrained. Hit: 4 (1d8) piercing damage plus 10 (3d6) necrotic damage. The target’s hit point maximum is reduced by an amount equal to the necrotic damage taken, and Basarana regains hit points equal to that amount. The reduction lasts until the target finishes a long rest. The target dies if this effect reduces its hit point maximum to 0. A humanoid slain in this way and then buried in the ground rises the following night in a new form under Basarana's control.
Withering Gaze. Ranged Spell Attack: +7 to hit, range 60 ft., one target. Hit: 7 (2d6) necrotic damage.
Basarana can take 3 legendary actions, choosing from the options below. Only one legendary action option can be used at a time and only at the end of another creature’s turn. Basarana regains spent legendary actions at the start of its turn.
Move. Basarana moves up to her speed.
Attack. Basarana makes one Root Strike or Withering Gaze attack.
Sap Life (Costs 2 Actions). Basarana makes one Sap Life attack.
Description
Basarana was an Anderian of the First Strain who took to the planet below her with a hunger for knowledge and power. Over her long life, she came to understand her mortality; though she would theoretically never die to old age, she could skill be killed. Through her efforts to expand her mind and bind the power of the land around her to herself, she managed to escape death by mastering the very power of nature itself.
As she drew more of nature's might into herself, her body began to change, natural flesh becoming rough and bark-like. Discovering a place of great magical potential high in the mountains, Basarana used the power of an eclipse of Fel'Dremor to create a mountain fortress, storing inside her horde of magical artifacts, tomes on nature magic, and other prized possessions. With her body becoming more and more rigid by the day, Basarana sat upon her throne, settling her body into place as her limbs took root in the rock of the mountain and attuned to the natural magic surrounding her.
Now, her body sits in the depths of Mount Basra, bound to the rock and stone by millennia of growth, acting as a phylactery for Basarana's soul while she uses her magic to manifest an avatar of herself within her domain.
Lair and Lair Actions
On initiative count 20 (losing initiative ties), Basarana can take a lair action to cause one of the following effects:
- Poisonous spores fill a 10-foot cube that the Basarana can see within 120 feet of it. Any creature that enters the cloud for the first time on a turn or starts its turn there must succeed on a DC 17 Constitution saving throw or be poisoned until the end of its next turn. The cloud lasts for 1 minute or until it is dispersed by a strong wind.
- A wall of tangled brush bristling with thorns springs into existence on a solid surface within 120 feet of Basarana. The wall is up to 60 feet long, 10 feet high, and 5 feet thick, and it blocks line of sight. When the wall appears, each creature in its area must make a DC 15 Dexterity saving throw. A creature that fails the save takes 14 (3d8) piercing damage and is pushed 5 feet out of the wall’s space, appearing on whichever side of the wall it wants. A creature can move through the wall, albeit slowly and painfully. For every 1 foot a creature travels through the wall, it must spend 4 feet of movement. Furthermore, a creature in the wall’s space must make a DC 15 Dexterity saving throw once each round it’s in contact with the wall, taking 14 (3d8) piercing damage on a failed save, or half as much damage on a successful one. Each 10-foot section of wall has AC 5, 15 hit points, vulnerability to fire damage, resistance to bludgeoning and piercing damage, and immunity to psychic damage. The wall sinks back into the ground when Basarana uses this lair action again or when Basarana dies.
- Rotten roots and vines magically erupt in a 20-foot radius centered on a point on the ground that Basarana can see within 120 feet of it. Basarana is unaffected by the roots and vines. For all other creatures, the area becomes difficult terrain, and each creature in the area must succeed on a DC 17 Strength saving throw or be restrained by the roots. As an action, a creature can try to free itself or another creature within its reach, doing so with a successful DC 17 Strength (Athletics) check. The roots and vines wilt away when Basarana uses this lair action again or when Basarana dies.
