Amorphous. The adapter beast can move through a space as narrow as 1 inch wide without squeezing.
Luck (3/day). The adapter beast has a knack for getting into places it shouldn't. When it fails a saving throw or ability check, it can choose to succeed instead.
Multiattack. The adapter beast makes two attacks with its pseudopods.
Pseudopod. Melee Weapon Attack: +6 to hit, reach 10 ft., one target. Hit: 7 (1d6 + 4) bludgeoning damage plus 3 (1d6) acid damage.
Mold. When an adapter beast is hit with an attack, its body molds to the shape of the weapon, projectile, or magical effect which struck it; it then absorbs some of the attack's damage. Roll 1d10 and subtract that amount from the damage received.
Split. When an adapter beast that is Medium is subjected to lightning or slashing damage, it splits into two new adapter beasts if it has at least 10 hit points. Each new adapter beast has hit points equal to half the original adapter beast's, rounded down. New adapter beasts are Small.
Description
Adapter beasts superficially resemble displacer beasts: black with a cat-like form and two "tentacles" protruding from its back. However, adapter beasts are actually a completely separate kind of fey: it's theorised that, long ago, an ooze began mimicking the appearance of the terrible displacer beast, while keeping its amorphous qualities. As such, while an adapter beast physically resembles a displacer beast, its temperament, nature, and personality is vastly different.
Chaotic Schemers. Tricksters and trouble-makers that prefer slinking through the shadows than entering combat, an adapter beast forced to fight will often first try to flee. With no apparent escape route, their next trick is to flare their pseudopod "tentacles" and make a menacing display similar to that of a displacer beast, hoping to scare off potential predators.
Unknown Origins. While true displacer beasts have always been found in the feywild, adapter beasts appeared suddenly and without a clear history of where they came from. As they clearly have ooze-like qualities, the most popular theory is that adapter beasts were sewn into the feywild by worshippers of Juiblex, the demon lord of slimes and oozes. Given adapter beasts' mostly benign nature, however, even practitioners of this theory wonder at the reasoning behind the creation of such a creature.
Clever to a Fault. While they cannot speak, natives of the feywild are sure that adapter beasts understand more than they ought to: if a traveller mentions that a favourite trinket is stored safely in their pack, that trinket will disappear despite all precautions; if food or other resources are placed in a locked chest, the chest will be unlocked rather than broken, and its contents stolen. However, with such intelligence comes certain quirks--adapter beasts have been known to inadvertently put themselves in danger by venturing too close to strange creatures and places, their curiosity sometimes leading to their injury or death.
