Aerial Combat Tactics. The Athasian aarakocra prefers aerial combat, utilizing its flyby ability to swoop in and attack from the air. It uses its talons and javelins to strike at enemies from above before retreating out of their reach.
Description
Athasian aarakocra are intelligent, birdlike creatures that inhabit the deep deserts of Athas. They have large wingspans that allow them to soar on thermals in search of food. Their bodies are protected by bony plates on their chest, and they have retractable talons on their legs that can be used as claws.
With black eyes and distinctive plumage, Athasian aarakocra resemble vultures from a distance. They speak their own language, as well as the languages of other large birds. Some can also communicate in the common tongue.
In combat, Athasian aarakocra utilize their aerial advantage to strike foes from above with their talons and ranged attacks. They may employ nets to entangle ground-based opponents, and they excel at attacking flying creatures with precise dives.
These aarakocra live in tribes, led by their oldest members. The tribe's leader can have psionic abilities and may use them in combat if threatened. Good-aligned tribes may allow caravans to pass through their territory in exchange for tribute, while evil tribes are more likely to attack caravans regardless. The hunt of a silt drake is a sacred rite of passage for adolescent aarakocra.
Overall, Athasian aarakocra are proud and territorial beings, well adapted to their desert environment, and they fiercely protect their nests and hunting grounds.
