Traits

Calescent Aura. At the start of the dragon’s turn, it can force any number of creatures of its choice within 10 feet of itself to make a DC 22 Constitution saving throw. On a failed save, a creature takes 7 (2d6) fire damage and is frightened of the dragon until the start of its next turn.

Legendary Resistance (3/Day). If the dragon fails a saving throw, it can choose to succeed instead.

Feral Instinct. The dragon has advantage on initiative rolls.

Reckless. At the start of its turn, the dragon can gain advantage on all melee weapon attack rolls during that turn, but attack rolls against the dragon have advantage until the start of its next turn.

Relentless Rage (1/Day). If the dragon is reduced to 0 hit points while raging, it drops to 1 hit point instead.

Actions

Multiattack. The dragon makes three attacks (or four while raging).

Bite. Melee Weapon Attack: +14 to hit, reach 10 ft., one target. Hit: 19 (2d10 + 8) piercing damage plus 7 (2d6) fire damage. While in tyrannosaurus form if the target is a Medium or smaller creature, it is grappled (escape DC 22). Until this grapple ends, the target is restrained, and the dragon can't bite another target.

Claw. Melee Weapon Attack: +14 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 15 (2d6 + 8) slashing damage.

Tail. Melee Weapon Attack: +14 to hit, reach 15 ft., one target. Hit: 17 (2d8 + 8) bludgeoning damage.

Maul (humanoid form only). Melee Weapon Attack: +14 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 14 (2d6 + 8) bludgeoning damage.

Crushing Leap (dragon or tyrannosaurs form only). If the dragon jumps at least 25 feet as part of its movement, it can then use this action to land on its feet in a space that contains one or more other creatures. Each of those creatures is pushed to an unoccupied space within 5 feet of the dragon and must make a DC 22 Dexterity saving throw. On a failed save, a creature takes 26 (4d12) bludgeoning damage and is knocked prone. On a successful save, a creature takes half as much damage and isn’t knocked prone.

Fire Breath (Recharge 5–6). The dragon exhales fire in a 60-foot cone. Each creature in that area must make a DC 21 Dexterity saving throw, taking 63 (18d6) fire damage on a failed save, or half as much damage on a successful one.

Bonus Actions

Shapechanger. The dragon can polymorph into a tyrannosaurus or a Medium humanoid, or back into its true form, which is dragon. Its statistics (other than its size) are the same in each form. Any equipment it is wearing or carrying isn’t transformed. It reverts to its true form if it dies.

Rage (Recharges after a Short or Long Rest). The dragon enters a rage that lasts until it falls unconscious or chooses to end it (no action required). While raging, the dragon gains the following benefits:

The dragon has advantage on Strength checks and Strength saving throws.

  • The dragon deals an extra 4 damage when it hits a target with a melee weapon attack
  • The dragon has resistance to bludgeoning, piercing, and slashing damage
  • The dragon can’t be charmed or frightened
  • The dragon can make an additional melee weapon attack

When the dragon’s rage ends, it gains one level of exhaustion.

Legendary Actions

The dragon can take 3 legendary actions, choosing from the options below. Only one legendary action option can be used at a time and only at the end of another creature's turn. The dragon regains spent legendary actions at the start of its turn.

Detect. The dragon makes a Wisdom (Perception) check.

Pursuit. The dragon moves up to 40 feet in a straight line toward one creature it can see. This movement ignores opportunity attacks.

Searing Bite (Costs 2 Actions). The dragon makes one Bite attack. If the attack hits, it deals an additional 7 (2d6) fire damage.

Description

Angkarsaryx is an adult red dragon with a fascination with all thangs primal. He rules over a primordial lost world as its self appointed king.

Lair and Lair Actions

Lair Actions

On initiative count 20 (losing initiative ties), the dragon takes a lair action to cause one of the following effects; the dragon can’t use the same effect two rounds in a row:

  • Magma erupts from a point on the ground the dragon can see within 120 feet of it, creating a 20-foot-high, 5-foot-radius geyser. Each creature in the geyser’s area must make a DC 15 Dexterity saving throw, taking 21 (6d6) fire damage on a failed save, or half as much damage on a successful one.
  • A tremor shakes the lair in a 60-foot radius around the dragon. Each creature other than the dragon on the ground in that area must succeed on a DC 15 Dexterity saving throw or be knocked prone.
  • Volcanic gases form a cloud in a 20-foot-radius sphere centered on a point the dragon can see within 120 feet of it. The sphere spreads around corners, and its area is lightly obscured. It lasts until initiative count 20 on the next round. Each creature that starts its turn in the cloud must succeed on a DC 13 Constitution saving throw or be poisoned until the end of its turn. While poisoned in this way, a creature is incapacitated.

Regional Effects

The region containing a legendary red dragon’s lair is warped by the dragon’s magic, which creates one or more of the following effects:

  • Small earthquakes are common within 6 miles of the dragon’s lair.
  • Water sources within 1 mile of the lair are supernaturally warm and tainted by sulfur.
  • Rocky fissures within 1 mile of the dragon’s lair form portals to the Elemental Plane of Fire, allowing creatures of elemental fire into the world to dwell nearby.
  • Dinosaurs are attracted to the area within 6 miles of the lair and settle there in large numbers.

If the dragon dies, these effects fade over the course of 1d10 days.
