Description
Abacadarius is a legendary figure that rules a realm infamous for its hordes of Undead that was once ruled by an archlich. It is written that centuries ago, the people of the realm, tired of the archliches tyranny, attempted a siege. The archliches power was great however, and his army of Undead fought back. Abacadarius, just a young foot soldier at the time, was attacked by a vampire and his werewolf retinue. This inspired a great evil in his heart along with a blend of new powers it is said that Abacadarius took the scimitar of the archlich that had lead the assault and destroyed both him and his phylactery without even a scratch. Once the battle was won the people rejoiced, but Abacadarius had other plans. He imposed a himself monarch of the realm, and the people lived in misery for the rest of there lives before being enlisted to Abacadarius' endless Undead hordes.
For centuries Abacadarius has dwelled in his domain, the great fortress at the centre of the realm known as the Dread Castle. He was born to Goblin father and High Elf mother, granting him an unusual appearance, which is that of a tall, incredibly handsome elf, aside from his green skin and longer ears, which are hidden by his long black hair that is thick and unkempt like fur. Most of his size comes from his decadent clothing. He wears a large trailing cloak like that of a king and underneath wears all manners of expensive jewellery and armour pieces. Seldom seen are the leathery black bat wings that are hidden beneath his cloak, or the sharp fangs beneath his snarling lips.
Abacadarius imposes himself arch-regent of not only the Undead but also Goblinoids. His lair is filled with this mindless servants, and he tends to shun his elven heritage despite the incredible charismatic and intelligent features it lends him. He, in his years of solitude has began learning magic to heighten his powers, and slowly begins to mirror the great archlich he defeated those thousands of years ago.
Lair and Lair Actions
Abacadarius' lair is the Dread Castle, an ancient fort that belonged to the archlich that orchestrated the battle that gave Abacadarius his powers in the first place. It is filled with trick hallways, dungeons and treasure rooms, acting more as a labyrinth then a home, with the only rooms resembling functional housing being the barracks that house Abacadarius' Undead army and misfit goblin kin. Abacadarius himself dwells in the deepest bowels of his castle, where his greatest treasures lie. His unique vampire powers mean he requires no resting place, however Abacadarius still slumbers in the large mithral coffin that once contained the archliches phylactery.
Lair Actions
On initiative count 20 (losing initiative ties), Abacadarius takes a lair action to cause one of the following effects; Abacadarius can’t use the same effect two rounds in a row:
- 1d4 Skeletons under his command appear within 10ft of Abacadraius.
- Magical darkness fills the room until Abacadarius' next turn.
Regional Effects
The region containing Abacadarius’s lair is influenced by him and his undead retinue, which creates one or more of the following effects:
- Plants growth is stunted in a 20 mile radius and within 6 miles of Abacadarius' lair, no plants can grow.
- Within 6 miles of Abacadarius' lair, Undead and Goblinoids are more common.
- Also within 6 miles of Abacadarius' lair, thick purple fog covers the ground and purple storm clouds cover the sky.
If Abacadarius dies or moves locations for more than a month these effects fade over the course of 1d8 days.

Great lore and cool statblock. One question: how did a high elf marry a goblin?
It's really well made and quite balanced. I might use it in my undead campaign.
Thanks so much, I really appreciate your comment as I put a lot of effort into making the stat block balanced and having compelling lore! It's actually a highly reworked version of A"aabacedarius, King of the Goblins and the Undead by Skipped_Bail, as I also thought the original lore from that was fairly intriguing so I decided to build on it and effectively remake the stat block from scratch to run as a BBEG in a future campaign, so it's awesome to hear that you are considering using it!
In the original iteration of Abecedarius he was also a Half-Elf, Half-Goblin, and I thought the idea of a tall and elegant mischief maker sounded hilarious, but for how that might actually work I'm going to say that it was either a magical boon imbued on the parents that made it possible or maybe it is just biologically possible but rare as both elves and goblins were originally fey creatures?? You can choose lol, thanks again for checking out the stat block :)
I think I will use him. I usually use skeletons and i've made some of my own if you want to see them. the guy makes a change from skeletons, don't you think?
