Traits

Chains of Chaos. aura 10 ft.; enemies treat the aura as difficult terrain.

Dark One's Blessing. When the alhel reduces a hostile creature to 0 hit points, it gains 25 temporary hit points.

Devil's Sight. Magical darkness doesn't impede the alhel's darkvision.

Fiend Eater. Alhels deal double damage to fiends with melee weapon attacks.

Innate Spellcasting. The alhel's innate spellcasting ability is Charisma (spell save DC 18, +10 to hit with spell attacks). The alhel can cast the following spells, requiring only verbal components:

At will: detect thoughts, earth tremor, misty step, sleep

3/day each: detect magic, enlarge/reduce, fear, gaseous form, invisibility

1/day each: divine word, mind blank, power word stun

Magic Resistance. The alhel has advantage on saving throws against spells and other magical effects.

Actions

Multiattack. The alhel makes three attacks: one with its bite and two with its claws. Alternatively, the alhel can sacrifice 20 hit points to make 7 chain attacks, with no more than 4 attacks targeting the same target.

Bite. Melee Weapon Attack: +10 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 17 (2d10 + 6) piercing damage plus 7 (3d4) psychic damage.

Claws. Melee Weapon Attack: +10 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 13 (2d6 + 6) slashing damage.

Chain. Melee Weapon Attack: +8 to hit, reach 10 ft., one target. Hit: 11 (2d6 + 4) piercing damage.

Dread Howl (recharge 5-6). The alhel rears its head back and howls, sending a wave of force forwards in a 20-ft cone; creatures in the area must make a DC 17 Wisdom saving throw, taking 21 (2d10 + 10) force damage on a failed save and half as much on a success. This damage bypasses all resistances and immunities.

Description

Alhels are vulpine warlocks that have been tasked by Asmodeus, Lord of the Nine Hells, to oversee a vast library of the true names of devils. Treacherous and conniving, alhels frequently abuse the powers vested to them by Asmodeus to promote and demote infernal minions. Asmodeus's armies have had to quash several rebellions led by alhels and their devilish myrmidons throughout the millennia, but the Devil King refuses to strip the alhels of their titles...

Broken Loose. In their natural form, alhels resemble giant, black-furred foxes with massive canine teeth. Spectral chains coil around its body and rear up like snakes when the alhel feels threatened. The source of an alhel's power is its command over language; using its sharp, jagged voice, an alhel can bend the weave at will. Alhels are fearsome, sadistic predators that love to terrorize fiends, particularly devils. Asmodeus ascended to power after he sealed away the horrific alhels and demoted them to glorified bookkeepers.

Silent no More. Asmodeus sealed off the alhels' innate magical powers using mystical muzzles, prohibiting them from ever verbally communicating in the process - or so the Devil King believed. The magical restraints that bind the alhels can be removed by speaking a magical code word that only Asmodeus and his closest advisors know, but they can also be removed non-magically by creatures that have a Dexterity score of 25 or higher. When an alhel is released from its restraints, it tries to free as many other alhels as it can before running amok.

Infernalesque. Because the alhels are only close relatives of the true devils, they do not possess true names and therefore cannot be summoned to other planes of existence.
