Traits

Water Breathing. The eye of the deep can breathe underwater.

Multiple Eyes. The eye of the deep has a central eye and two smaller eyes on long stalks. The central eye emits a blinding light in a cone (30 feet long, 20 feet wide at its base, 5 feet wide at its start). Creatures in the cone must make a DC 14 Constitution saving throw or be stunned for 2d4 rounds. The two smaller eyes can create illusions and cast hold person and hold monster spells independently.

Regeneration. If the eye stalks of the eye of the deep are severed, they will grow back in about a week.

Actions

Multiattack. The eye of the deep makes two pincer attacks and one bite attack.

Pincer. Melee Weapon Attack: +6 to hit, reach 10 ft., one creature. Hit: 7 (2d4 + 3) slashing damage.

Bite. Melee Weapon Attack: +6 to hit, reach 5 ft., one creature. Hit: 5 (1d6 + 3) piercing damage.

Blinding Light (Recharge 5-6). The central eye emits a blinding light in a 30-foot cone. Creatures in the cone must make a DC 14 Constitution saving throw or be blinded for 1 minute. A blinded creature can repeat the saving throw at the end of each of its turns, ending the effect on a success.

Reactions

Illusory Gaze. The eye of the deep can use one of its smaller eyes on long stalks to create an illusion as a reaction when it or a creature it can see within 30 feet is targeted by an attack. The attacker must make a DC 14 Intelligence saving throw. On a failed save, the attacker's attack misses, and it becomes stunned until the start of its next turn.

Hold Gaze. The eye of the deep can use one of its smaller eyes on long stalks to cast hold person or hold monster (targeting a creature it can see within 30 feet) as a reaction when it or a creature it can see within 30 feet is targeted by an attack. The targeted creature must succeed on a DC 14 Wisdom saving throw or be [condition]paralyzed[condition] for the duration of the spell.

Description

Habitat/Society

The eye of the deep is a water-breathing variant of the infamous beholder, dwelling only at great depths in the ocean. It floats slowly about, stalking its prey in the dark underwater abyss. The creature's natural habitat makes it a formidable foe for adventurers exploring the depths of the sea.

Despite being a variant of the beholder, the eye of the deep does not have the same level of intelligence as its counterpart. It operates primarily on instinct and is driven by its predatory nature, using its various eyes and abilities to hunt and capture its victims. It is a solitary creature, dwelling in the darkness, and rarely seen in the company of others of its kind.

Ecology

The eye of the deep is a fearsome predator, using its large central eye to emit blinding light that stuns its prey, leaving them vulnerable to its crab-like pincers and sharp-toothed bite. Additionally, the two smaller eyes on long stalks can create illusions and cast powerful spells such as hold person and hold monster, further aiding the creature in capturing its victims.

The eye of the deep has a unique regenerative ability, allowing it to regrow its eye stalks if they are severed, making it a resilient and enduring creature in its harsh underwater environment.

Adventurers exploring the depths must exercise extreme caution when encountering the eye of the deep, as it is a formidable opponent that can easily incapacitate its prey before closing in for the kill with its powerful attacks. Its presence in the deep waters adds an element of danger and mystery to the uncharted depths of the ocean, making it a daunting and captivating encounter for those daring enough to venture into its domain.
