Description
These black scaled wyverns are the progeny of the Ancient Black Dragon, Belhemat. They are one small part of his plan to rid the realms of humanoids. In service of this plan, these wyverns were created as more intelligent, more robust, and more spiteful than typical wyverns. Their scales are hardened like a true dragon's and their necks are larger to accommodate their new acid spewing ability. Their tail stinger has been replaced with a sleek tail fin which assists them in swimming.
Like their father, Black Wyverns bear a disdain towards all humanoid races and even most monstrous races. For this reason, they are known to attack most races on sight and become large threats to local regions. They often begrudgingly travel in groups and are known to make pacts with goblinoids and kobolds for their protection. They will often attack and kill wyverns of the same gender while capturing others to use to propagate their species.
Lair and Lair Actions
Nearing true dragons in their behaviours, black wyverns may often attempt to lair like their larger relatives. What few lairs they have acquired mirror those of adult black dragons in layout, size, and general decor. However, due to the lack of swampland in their natural habitat, they will often compete with common wyverns for craggy caves and hilltop burrows. Black Wyverns try their best to make these reflect their preferred swamp environment by artificially flooding portions of their lairs and distributing rotting matter throughout. Unlike true dragon's lairs, Black Wyvern lairs are often small with only two or three chambers. However, lairs may grow much larger when a group of wyverns forms a family. It is not uncommon to find enslaved wyverns located throughout these lairs.
Unlike true dragons, black wyverns fail to create elaborate mechanisms to defend their lairs. Instead, they rely on younger wyverns and static obstacles to protect their small hoards.
- Acid Pool - The most common of these obstacles is a pool of acid with the sides of the pool sloping down steeply into it. The wyverns will use these to dispose of unwanted items or to launch unwitting adventurers into them. Anyone caught ending their turn in this pit will take 1d6 acid damage.
