Traits
  • Lord of the Woods: The Ashen Lord can use its action to control plants and vegetation within 120 feet of it, influencing their growth and shape. It can also shape the environment to create difficult terrain or natural obstacles.
  • Ashes to the Wind (Reaction): When the Ashen Lord is hit by a melee attack, it can unleash a cloud of ash, causing the attack to miss and allowing the Ashen Lord to teleport up to 60 feet to an unoccupied space it can see.
  • Undying Will: The Ashen Lord regains 20 (4d10) hit points at the start of each of its turns. If the Ashen Lord takes cold damage, this trait doesn't function at the start of the Ashen Lord's next turn. The Ashen Lord dies only if it starts its turn with 0 hit points and doesn't regenerate.
  • Eyes of the Woods: While within the White Woods the Ashen Lord can see all creatures and objects within it, even through magical darkness.
  • Voice of the Woods: The Ashen Lord's voice seems to come from all around when it speaks within the White Woods and it can communicate telepathically with any creature within the woods.
  • Sundering Embers: All fire damage dealt by the Ashen Lord bypasses resistances and immunities.
Actions

Multiattack: The Ashen Lord makes three attacks: two with Cinder's Edge and one with Death Blossom, Rending Bloom or uses Cleansing Flames if it is available.

Cinder's Edge: Melee Weapon Attack: +14 to hit, reach 10 ft., one target. Hit: 31 (4d10 + 7) slashing damage plus 14 (4d6) fire damage.

Death Blossom, Rending Bloom: The Ashen Lord can sprout and release Death Blossoms in a 30-foot radius centered on itself. Each creature in that area must make a DC 20 Constitution saving throw, taking 36 (8d8) necrotic damage on a failed save, or half as much damage on a successful one. A creature reduced to 0 hit points by this damage dies, and its corpse returns to the control of the Ashen Lord.

Cleansing Flames: The Ashen Lord unleashes a wave of hellfire in a 60-foot cone. Each creature in that area must make a DC 20 Dexterity saving throw, taking 45 (10d8) fire damage on a failed save, or half as much damage on a successful one.

Reactions

Ashes to the Wind (Reaction): When the Ashen Lord is hit by a melee attack, it can unleash a cloud of ash, causing the attack to miss and allowing the Ashen Lord to teleport up to 60 feet to an unoccupied space it can see.

Legendary Actions

The Ashen Lord gains 3 legendary actions per round, resetting on his turn. Upon using a legendary action choose from the selection below:

Cleansing Flames: The Ashen Lord unleashes a wave of hellfire in a 60-foot cone. Each creature in that area must make a DC 20 Dexterity saving throw, taking 45 (10d8) fire damage on a failed save, or half as much damage on a successful one.

Withering Roots: The Ashen Lord causes the ground to erupt in thorny roots in a 20-foot radius centered on a point it can see within 120 feet of it. Each creature in that area must succeed on a DC 20 Dexterity saving throw or be restrained until the end of the Ashen Lord's next turn.

Infernal Boon (Costs 2 Actions) The Ashen Lord channels infernal power into its attacks for the next three rounds. When activated, all of the Avatar's attacks deal an additional 40 (8d8) fire damage until the start of its fourth turn after activating this ability.

Description

Little is known about the Ashen Lord, merely a legend of his creation:

Long ago, a forbidden love kindled between an Elven daughter of the wilds and an Infernal son of death. Their union was a secret, for their people would have scorned their bond. But secrets have a way of unraveling, and when their love was discovered, they fled for their lives. They sought refuge in the desolate ash plains, in the heart of a barren wasteland, where one last sanctuary of beauty nestled in the breach. For years, they lived in this hidden paradise, building a life together amid the stark contrast of death and life. The woman, the sole keeper of her lineage's secrets, harnessed the power of nature, coaxing life from the parched earth, nurturing the land back to vibrant health. The man, in turn, constructed their home in the valley's center, ensuring they were never far from the sanctuary they had come to love. One fateful day, the woman discovered that new life stirred within her, a child soon to be born of their union. The lovers rejoiced and began preparations for their unborn child. However, as the months passed, the woman's strength waned, and the sanctuary mirrored her decline. The weeks leading to the child's birth saw both the woman and their cherished haven wither, succumbing to the relentless ravages of the wasteland. During this time, the man, unwittingly invoking the magic of his Infernal heritage, momentarily halted the encroaching death, allowing his beloved to endure, if only briefly. However, this respite would be short-lived. On the day of their child's birth, the forest seemed to mourn, echoing the woman's anguished cries. But what emerged was not a child but a monstrous entity. This twisted being, a mass of roots and fire, cried out in agony as it continually grew and was consumed by its own fiery essence. The sanctuary reacted violently, the entire forest coming to life, wreaking destruction upon everything in its path. The man, fleeing from the abomination, shielded his lover, protecting her from the onslaught unleashed by their beloved sanctuary. As he neared his final breath, the enchantment that had briefly preserved his love unraveled, allowing them to pass from this world as they had lived it, together in each other's arms. Alone and scarred, the monstrous entity they had unwittingly created roared in torment. It knew only confusion and pain, an eternal clash of elements within, a power that consumed itself but refused to die. For five days and nights, the creature's agonized cries resounded across the land, until, finally, the inner turmoil ceased. The creature had transformed, the warring powers that once destroyed one another found equilibrium. The infernal power merged with the forces of nature, birthing the Infernal Ash Wood, and the immortality that had allowed the man's love to endure granted the Ash Wood its ability to regenerate and renew itself. From that day onward, the sanctuary disappeared, leaving in its wake the White Woods, forever bearing the legacy of that ill-fated love

Lair and Lair Actions

The lair of the Ashen Lord is a foreboding sight nestled within the heart of the white woods. It takes the form of a vast, gaping hole in the ground, from which all the roots and twisted plant life of the surrounding area originate. The atmosphere within the lair is suffused with an eerie stillness, broken only by the occasional rustle of the overgrown flora.

As one approaches the lair, the ground becomes littered with the haunting remnants of failed endeavors, with scattered corpses and bones of fallen adventurers serving as grim reminders of the challenges that have been faced and lost. The air is thick with a palpable sense of dread, as if the very earth itself resists the intrusion of those who dare to challenge the Ashen Lord's dominion.

The interior of the lair is shrouded in a perpetual twilight, the ambient light filtering through the twisted canopy of the White Woods. The gnarled roots of ancient trees intertwine with the walls, creating a labyrinthine network of passageways and chambers. The air is heavy with the scent of decay and ancient magic, and an oppressive silence seems to hang in the air, broken only by the occasional echoing groan of the surrounding plant life.

In the heart of the lair, a sense of primal power emanates from a focal point, where the very essence of the Ashen Lord's influence is most potent. Here, the boundary between the natural world and the realm of death blurs, creating an otherworldly nexus where the clash of fire, wild nature, and death intertwines. It is a place where the very forces that sustain the Ashen Lord's power converge, creating an environment where life and death are locked in an eternal struggle.
