Traits

Dive Attack. If the peryton is flying and dives at least 30 feet straight toward a target and then hits it with a melee weapon attack, the attack deals an extra 9 (2d8) damage to the target.

Flyby. The peryton doesn’t provoke an opportunity attack when it flies out of an enemy’s reach.

Keen Sight and Smell. The peryton has advantage on Wisdom (Perception) checks that rely on sight or smell.

Forest Flier. The peryton ignores difficult terrain caused by trees, bushes, or similar vegetation, and it can take the Dash action as a bonus action on any turn so long as its movement speed is not reduced.

Actions

Multiattack. The peryton can use its Threat Display and make one gore attack and one talon attack.

Gore. Melee Weapon Attack: +5 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 7 (1d8 + 3) piercing damage.

Talons. Melee Weapon Attack: +5 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 8 (2d4 + 3) piercing damage. If the attack hits, the Peryton can make a grapple attempt on the target as part of the same attack action.

Threat Display. Each creature of the peryton's choice that is within 30 feet of it and aware of it must succeed on a DC 14 Wisdom saving throw or become frightened for 1 minute.  A creature can repeat the saving throw at the end of each of its turns, ending the effect on itself on a success.  If a creature's saving throw is successful or the effect ends on it, the creature is immune to the peryton's Threat Display for the next 24 hours.

Description

Blood Perytons are a crimson-feathered variant of the normal Peryton that live in the vast Bensin mountain range.  They are fearless and vicious predators, commonly attacking prey much larger than themselves using their massive curved talons and serrated antlers.

Blood Perytons have shorter wings than normal Perytons, as well as a much longer tail.  By spreading their tail like a peacock, they can perform a dazzling threat display that seems to use innate magic to inflict supernatural fear in those who see it.
