Traits

Fire Form. The fire ferret can choose to turn this form on or off as an action. When off, the fire ferret looks like an orange-furred ferret. The fire ferret can move through a space as narrow as 1 inch wide without squeezing. A creature that touches the fire ferret or hits it with a melee attack while within 5 feet of it takes 2 (1d4) fire damage. In addition, the fire ferret can enter a hostile creature's space and stop there. The first time it enters a creature's space on a turn, that creature takes 2 (1d4)  fire damage and catches fire; until someone takes an action to douse the fire, the creature takes 2 (1d4)  fire damage at the start of each of its turns.

Illumination. When fire form is on, the fire ferret sheds bright light in a 10-foot radius and dim light in an additional 20 feet.

Water Susceptibility. For every 5 feet the fire ferret moves in water, or for every gallon of water splashed on it, it takes 1 cold damage.

Actions

Bite. Melee Weapon Attack: +5 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 1 piercing damage.

Spit (Recharges after short or long rest). The Fire Ferret spits fire at a creature within 5 feet of it. The creature must make a DC 11 Dexterity saving throw, taking 5 (2d4) fire damage on a failed save, or half as much damage on a successful one.

Description

Fire ferrets hail from the plain of fire, and are tiny, friendly fire elementals that enjoy nothing more than a fun romp with each other, and even other good creatures. Though they can turn their fire form ability on and off, they sometimes get so carried away when playing with non-fire resistant friends that accidental burns can occur. When their fire form is turned off they resemble a natural ferret with orange, rippling "fur" and glowing red eyes.

Fire ferrets have been known to act as familiars to good-aligned magic users, especially those that specialize in the element of fire, and can be called with the Find Familiar spell to serve in this capacity. Those who would keep a fire ferret as a familiar or pet are cautioned, however, to be ever on their guard. Fire ferrets are incredibly curious, and have been known to accidentally start fires while playing or investigating their surroundings. The like to sleep a lot, and are happiest curled up in a fire-proof ferret house, which could be as simple as a fur-lined sack treated with magic to be immune to fire. They hate and fear water, which can kill them if they are exposed to it for too long, and will not willingly enter a body of water, or go outside when it is raining.
