Traits

Keen Smell. The black Bearowl has advantage on Wisdom (Perception) checks that rely on smell.

Flyby. The black Bearowl doesn't provoke opportunity attacks when it flies out of an enemy's reach.

Honey craving. Black and brown Bearowls love honey. A lone black Bearowl can be distracted with a spoonful of bee honey, unless you are hostile to it. A lone black Bearowl can be tamed over 30 days by feeding it twice a day with a spoonful of bee honey, if you are not hostile to it or the swarm it belongs to (if it has one) during that time.

If it's black, fight back. A creature can use its action to try to intimidate the lone black Bearowl, making a Charisma (Intimidation) check (DC 15). On a success, the lone black Bearowl is frightened for 1 minute. On a failure, the black Bearowl cannot be frightened by that creature for 24 hours. The black Bearowl can make a Wisdom saving throw at the end of its turns (DC 15). On a success, the black Bearowl is no longer frightened by that creature.

Actions

Claws & Bite. Melee Weapon Attack: +6 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 3 (1d4+1) slashing damage plus 3 (1d4+1) piercing damage.

Take flight (2/Day). The Bearowl takes flight using its owl wings. For 1 minute, the black Bearowl gains a flying speed equal to its walking speed.

Description

Not to be confused with the Owlbear, the Bearowl is a diminutive bear, with owl wings sprouting from its back. Bearowls come in different colors, and live in swarms of a single color. Although their preferred methods of travel is by walking or climbing, a Bearowl can use its wings to fly for short amounts of time, usually while hunting. The diet of Bearowls differ depending on their color, but they all share an irresistible craving for honey, causing a feeding frenzy when large amounts are found.

Black Bearowls are generally considered to be less dangerous than their cousins, but they will defend themselves should they or their swarm be attacked. Black bearowls are the smallest and least aggressive of the Bearowl subspecies, but also the most common, composing more than three fourths of the swarms of living Bearowls.

Black Bearowls eat mostly insects, berries, grass and leaves. They also eat a lot of flowers during spring, and are known for exterminating bees in their home forest and nearby apiaries by hunting bees and hives to extinction. To avoid a fight with a black Bearowl swarm, you can attempt to intimidate it or distract it with a spoonful of bee honey, unless you harmed or threaten a Bearowl of the swarm.
