Traits

False Appearance. While the Black Willow remains motionless, it is indistinguishable from an ordinary willow tree.

Actions

Entangling Roots. The Black Willow can cause roots to burst from the ground in a 20-foot square within 60 feet of it. Each creature in that area must succeed on a DC 15 Strength saving throw or become restrained. A creature can use its action to make a DC 15 Strength check, freeing itself or another creature within its reach on a success. The roots have AC 15 and 15 hit points; destroying the roots frees a restrained creature.

Multiattack. The Black Willow makes two slam attacks.

Slam. Melee Weapon Attack: +7 to hit, reach 10 ft., one target. Hit: 13 (2d8 + 4) bludgeoning damage.

Black Miasma (Recharge 5-6). The Black Willow releases a cloud of toxic miasma in a 20-foot radius centered on itself. Each creature in that area must make a DC 15 Constitution saving throw, taking 28 (8d6) poison damage on a failed save, or half as much damage on a successful one. Additionally, a creature that fails the saving throw is poisoned for 1 minute. A poisoned creature can repeat the saving throw at the end of each of its turns, ending the poisoned condition on a success.

Animate Dead Wood (1/Day). The Black Willow targets a pile of dead wood or logs within 30 feet of it. The dead wood animates as though affected by the Animate Objects spell for up to 1 hour, following the Black Willow's commands.

Summon Twig Blights (Recharge 6). The Black Willow summons 1d4+2 twig blights. These summoned creatures are friendly to the Black Willow and follow its commands.

Legendary Actions

The Black Willow can take 3 legendary actions, choosing from the options below. Only one legendary action option can be used at a time and only at the end of another creature's turn. The Black Willow regains spent legendary actions at the start of its turn.

  • Move. The Black Willow moves up to its speed without provoking opportunity attacks.
  • Root Attack. The Black Willow uses its Entangling Roots action.
  • Slam (Costs 2 Actions). The Black Willow makes one slam attack.

Description

The Black Willow, a sinister and malevolent entity, thrives in dark forests and swamps. Its boughs twist with an almost sentient malevolence, and its roots serve as both traps and weapons. Those foolish enough to approach unguarded risk becoming entangled in its roots or falling victim to its poisonous miasma. It harbors a deep hatred for all living creatures and is known to command the forest's denizens to do its bidding, spreading darkness and decay wherever it roams.
