Almost Spectralish Duplicate (Recharges after a Long Rest).
As a standard action, the baby berbalang creates one spectral duplicate of itself in an unoccupied space it can see within 60 feet of it. While the duplicate exists, the berbalang is unconscious (it is usually even more playful in this form, acting almost as if it seems to think it’s invulnerable). A Berbalangs Pup can have only one duplicate at a time. The duplicate disappears when it or the berbalang drops to 0 hit points or when the berbalang dismisses it as a free action.
The duplicate has the same statistics and knowledge as the berbalang, and everything experienced by the duplicate is known by the berbalang.
Learning to Cast Spells. The berbalang’s starting to learn how to cast spells. It’s based on Intelligence ability (spell save DC 8). The berbalang can attempt to cast the following spells, requiring no material components, but must make a wild magic check every time it cast a spell. On a roll of 18-20 roll on the wild magic table:
At will: speak with the dead, thaumaturgy, dancing lights
1/day: plane shift (self only), Comprehend Language, Shield
The Berbalangs Pups start to be more responsible with their spells and still playful. They start to Plane shift and fade
Nibble: Melee Weapon Attack: - 0 to hit, one target. Hit: (1d4 -0) piercing damage.
Grab: Melee Weapon Attack: - 0 to hit, one target. Hit: (1d4) slashing damage.
Description
Berbalangs creep across the petrified remains of dead gods adrift on the Astral Plane. Obsessed with gathering secrets, both from the gods they inhabit and from the bones of dead creatures, they call forth the spirits of the dead and force them to divulge what they learned in life.
Berbalang Pup have pick up most of the languages from the dead that they have talked too and the primary language of there parents.
At this point in the Pups life they start to look to the ones around them and learn what behaviors are appropriate(what their alignment will lean too). It’s important that they learn the appropriate social behaviors or a Pup could lean towards being more aggressive.
Learning from the Dead. Berbalangs prefer to speak with dead things mostly, and specifically only to the spirits they call forth in the hope of learning secrets. The older Berbalangs record their stories on the bones that once belonged to these creatures, thus preserving the information they gain. But the young ones like to learn and play with the dead spirts. Learning with time new languages and what secrets are worth remembering. This is still true for the Pup.
Spectral Spy and Kidnapping: The pursuit of knowledge drives everything berbalangs do. Although they mostly learn their secrets from the dead, they aren’t above spying on the living to take knowledge from them as well. A berbalang can create a spectral duplicate of itself and send the duplicate out to gather information on other planes by watching places where the gods and their servants gather. When a berbalang is perceiving its environment through its duplicate, its actual body is unconscious and can’t protect or nourish itself. Thus, a berbalang typically uses its duplicate for only a short time before returning its consciousness to its body.
The baby Berbalang will use this ability to observe and learn from others. The obsession with secrets comes later.
Oracles. The knowledge that berbalangs accumulate makes them great sources of information for powerful people traveling the planes. Berbalangs ignore petitioners, however, unless they come bearing a choice secret or the bones of a particularly interesting creature. Githyanki have found a way to coexist with berbalangs, and sometimes use the creatures to spy on their enemies and to watch over their crèches on the Material Plane.
Sometimes pirates or others have been known to kidnap the younglings. Training them to be their own spy.
