Tale Phylactery. A tale told to every man, woman and child contains the Lich’s soul. When the Lich dies, it shatters and explodes. In 3d4 days, the Tale, Song, or Poem causes the Lich to reappear within 2d4 miles of where it died. If the Lich died inside a magic circle cast to contain Undead, the Lich instead reappears inside the body of a pre-existing small child within three planes of existence or one million miles, whichever is bigger. Creatures taken control this way have all the Lich's memories. When the Lich dies after being reborn this way, it resumes being a full Lich. Whether or not the child has any abilities because of this rebirth is up to you.
Tragic End. When the Lich dies, it shatters minds and souls near it. Any creature within ten feet of it take 30d4 force damage and 10d6 psychic damage. All creatures within 20 ft. take 10d6 psychic damage, and makes a DC 16 DEX Saving Throw. They take 15d4 force damage on a failed throw, or half as much on a successful one. All creatures within 100 ft. are blinded and deafened, and the explosion can be seen for ten miles. If the Phylactery still exists in its true form, a portal to a place of your choice opens where the Lich stood before it died.
Legendary Resistance (4/Day). If the Lich fails a saving throw, it can choose to succeed instead.
Undead Nature. The Lich doesn’t need air, food, drink, or sleep.
Bardic Inspiration (10/day). Choose a creature. That creature gains one Bardic Inspiration die, a d12. That creature may add that die to any roll it makes, after the result but before the DM confirms the success or failure. A creature may have up to four Inspiration dice this way.
Multiattack. The Lich uses Spellcasting and preforms a Song.
Hypnotic Song. Psychic Weapon Attack: The Lich plays or sings a soothing song. Each other creature within 20 ft. rolls a DC 17 Wisdom or Intelligence Saving Throw, whichever is lower. On a failed save, they fall unconscious. On a successful save, they lose concentration on all spells they are casting and have disadvantage to all attacks until the end of the next turn.
Fear Song. Psychic Weapon Attack: The Lich sings or plays a terrifying, screeching song. Each other creature within hearing range makes a DC 18 Intelligence saving throw and becomes frightened. Each creature takes 1d100 psychic damage on a failed save or half as much on a successful one.
(2/day) Seduction Song. The Lich sings or plays a beautiful song or poem, chooses up to four creatures that can hear it, and rolls Deception. Each selected creature then rolls a Intelligence saving throw with DC equal to the total of the Lich's roll. Selected creatures become Prone and Incapacitated on a failed save, becoming enthralled with the Lich.
(1/day) Disintegration Song. The Lich sings or plays a unnerving, soft song. Each other creature that can hear the song rolls a DC 22 Wisdom save, taking 10d12 Necrotic damage on a failed save, or half as much on a successful one.
Spellcasting. The Lich casts one of the following spells, using Charisma as the spellcasting ability (spell save DC 20):
At will: detect magic, vicious mockery at level 11, dispel magic, mislead, modify memory (Only memories related to the Phylactery can be modified this way), find the path, minor illusion
2/day each: otto's irresistible dance, teleport, mass suggestion, greater invisibility, hideous laughter
1/day each: dominate person at as an eighth level spell, feeblemind, imprisonment
1/week: true polymorph
Simple Poem. The Lich sings a non-magical poem to a creature. That creature rolls a DC 18 Wisdom saving throw or becomes charmed by the Lich. This affects creatures with charm immunity as though they had charm resistance instead.
Secretive Consultation. The Lich speaks to another creature it can see. No other creature can hear the conversation. All speaking restrictions still apply.
Miraculous Pickpocket. Whenever a creature attempts to move out of the range of the Lich, the Lich may use its reaction to take one object no larger than a cubic foot from the creatures inventory.
Cutting Words. By expending a use of Bardic Inspiration, the Lich may use their reaction to contest another creatures attack roll, ability check, or damage roll, by rolling a Bardic Inspiration die and subtracting the original result with the Bardic die's result.
The Lich can take 4 legendary actions, choosing from the options below. Only one legendary action option can be used at a time and only at the end of another creature’s turn. The Lich regains 1d4 spent legendary actions at the start of its turn.
Spellcasting. The Lich casts a spell.
Undeath's Grace. The Lich gains advantage on all saving throws until the beginning of their next turn, and immediately succeeds on all dexterity checks until the end of the next turn.
Eloquent Speech (2 Actions). The Lich Monologues, causing each creature that can understand the language it speaks to grow bored and lies down on the ground, becoming Prone.
Somber Sonnet (3 Actions). The Lich preforms the Seduction Song ability.
Remorseful Remembrance (1/Month, 4 Actions). The Lich reflects on itself, and draws on its inner demons to summon an undead of your choice with a CR of less than or equal to 17 to an unoccupied space that the Lich can see. The summoned undead must obey the will of the Lich, and if not directly in control of the Lich, it acts as it would normally. This monster returns to whence it came after 6d4 turns. (Or up to two days, if the Lich isn't in combat.)
Description
A Bardic Lich is the most known storyteller, famous poet, or renowned musician in this land. After coming to a decision to live forever, an aspiring Bardic Lich must preform a ritual, revolving around making piece of utterly original art (Any medium is worthy), at which the end of the ritual the aspiring Lich signs the project with poisonous ink, then drinks the rest of poison and dies. Then, they will return to life as a Lich! (Or unlife, rather.) Then, in order to stay at full power, they must spread the art in whatever shape or form they see fit, but require free-thinking (As in intelligent) minds to hold the uncorrupted knowledge of the art.
Like other Liches, Bardic Liches are spellcasters who have cheated death, but a Bardic Lich does so by creating a piece of art they they pour their soul into, literally. The soul spreads itself among the people who hear it (Like butter over bread), which bestows undeath upon the bard. Canny foes can sabotage an Bardic Lich’s revival by slaying the Lich in a magic circle, thereby forcing the Lich to return in a distorted form, robbed of most of its power.
Renown Power
The Lich's power is equal to the renown of their creation. They also begin to lose power if the work becomes corrupted, or too few souls hold the power. (ex: If only ten people exist, having all ten know the uncorrupted art doesn't count as 100% population.) Population range is determined by the DM. For example, if the campaign is cross-world, the population might be determined only by the population of the Lich's home-world, or by the people who are in a certain range of them . . (etc. etc.)
| Renown | Power |
|---|---|
| 1-10% Population | The Phylactery begins to function improperly, and all restrictions from the 10-20% apply. |
| 10-20% Population | The Lich can only cast spells from their at will spells, and only 3/day. They cannot take legendary actions or use the Disintegration Song and Seduction Song ability, and can only make one reaction per day. |
| 20-40% Population | The Lich cant cast spells from they 1/day list. They cannot take legendary actions use the Disintegration Song ability, and can only make four reactions per day. |
| 40-70% population | The Lich can't use their legendary actions, or use the Disintegration Song ability. |
| 70-100% population | The Lich has all of its powers. |
Lair and Lair Actions
On initiative count 20 (losing initiative ties), the Bardic Lich can take a lair action to cause one of the following effects; the Bardic Lich can’t use the same effect two rounds in a row.
- The Lich Grants a Bardic Inspiration die to another creature. This does not expend a use of Bardic Inspiration.
- The Lich chooses a creature that is dead and has never been dead before, then casts Resurrection on it.
- The Lich summons up to four but at least one undead creatures with a cumulative CR of 12 or less. They are under complete control of the Lich and when not directly controlled by the Lich only preform basic functions. Reduce the CR total by 2 every time the Lich uses this ability, recharging every short rest.
