Angelic Weapons. Amnayel's weapon attacks are magical. When Amnayel hits with any weapon, the weapon deals an extra 5d8 radiant damage (included in the attack).
Divine Awareness. Amnayel knows if he hears a lie.
Innate Spellcasting. Amnayel's spellcasting ability is Charisma (spell save DC 20). Amnayel can innately cast the following spells, requiring no material components:
At will: detect evil and good, invisibility (self only)
3/day each: blade barrier, dispel evil and good, flame strike
1/day each: control weather, insect plague
Magic Resistance. Amnayel has advantage on saving throws against spells and other magical effects.
Shivastaba's Vessel. Amnayel's left arm is the host of Shivastaba, a normally slumbering greater demon. While in initiative, if there is an enemy that Amnayel can see within 120 ft. of him, he must make a DC 20 Charisma saving throw at the beginning of his turn. He must also make this saving throw upon taking a critical hit. On a failure, Shivastaba takes over Amnayel's body for one turn per point that Amnayel failed the save. While posessed by Shivastaba, Amnayel's eyes glow red, his alignment changes to Chaotic Evil, and he gains the following changes:
-Amnayel's Angelic Weapons feature becomes the Fiendish Weapons feature, which functions the same, except it does necrotic damage and deals an extra 3 dice of damage (for a total of 8d8). His Shadowflame action also deals 3 extra damage dice (for a total of 8d8) (Included in both of the attacks).
-Amnayel's resistance to Cold, Fire, and Lightning damage become Immunity to those damage types.
-Amnayel gains advantage on all attack rolls, and all attack rolls against Amnayel also have advantage.
-Amnayel can use Legendary Actions.
-Amnayel cannot cast spells or use his Healing Touch action. Any spells that he is currently concentrating on are unaffected.
While Amnayel is under Shivastaba's control, he must make one attack against a creature per turn. If he doesn't, Amnayel regains control of his body early. A creature that presents Amnayel with a holy symbol and reminds him of his identity can also allow him to make the save again, regaining control of his body on a success. If the creature is a cleric or paladin of a good aligned deity, Amnayel makes the save with advantage.
If Amnayel dies, Shivastaba dies as well; however, unless Amnayel dies on the Abyss, Shivastaba reforms instantly on that plane.
Multiattack. Amnayel makes two attacks.
Greatsword. Melee Weapon Attack: +12 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 21 (4d6 + 7) slashing damage plus 22 (5d8) radiant damage, or 36 (8d8) necrotic damage while under Shivastaba's control.
Shadowflame. Ranged Spell Attack: +12 to hit, range 40/120 ft., one target. Hit: 27 (6d8) necrotic damage, or 36 (8d8) necrotic damage while under Shivastaba's control. Any humanoid creature killed by this attack rises as a zombie one minute later permenantly under Amnayel's control. Hit or Miss: Amnayel must immediately make a saving throw as per his Shivastaba's Vessel trait.
Healing Touch (4/Day). The planetar touches another creature. The target magically regains 30 (6d8 + 3) hit points and is freed from any curse, disease, poison, blindness, or deafness.
While under Shivastaba's control (And only when under Shivastaba's control), Amnayel can take 3 legendary actions, choosing from the options below. Only one legendary action option can be used at a time and only at the end of another creature’s turn. Amnayel regains spent legendary actions at the start of his turn.
Attack. Amnayel makes one Greatsword attack.
Stunning Howl (Costs 2 Actions). Amnayel emits a blood-curdling howl. Each creature within 10 feet of him must make a DC 15 Constitution saving throw or be stunned until the end of their next turn.
Aura of Destruction (Costs 3 Actions). The red light from Amnayel's eyes overflows its sockets, pouring out in a 30 foot radius sphere. The sphere lasts until the end of Amnayel's last turn. Creatures in that aura must make a DC 15 Strength saving throw at the start of their turn or take 10 (3d6) force damage from the immense pressure. Objects automatically take this damage, and if an object that is Small or larger is reduced to 0 hit points by this ability, it explodes, forcing every creature that is within a sphere with a radius of half the object's largest dimension (for example, a large object, with a 10 foot side, makes a sphere with a 5 foot radius from itself) to make a DC 15 Dexterity saving throw or take 7 (2d6) bludgeoning damage from the shrapnel.
Additionally, all ranged weapon attacks (including thrown weapons) are made with disadvantage, and any attack that misses explodes, as described above.
Description
Amnayel, once a proud angel, was a sword that could slice through any demon he came across. However, after facing an especially dangerous foe, Amnayel lives in self-imposed exile from Mount Celestia, as his presence brings with it a great danger.
Amnayel looks like a typical planetar for the most part, with green skin, a bald head, and large, feathery wings. Where his appearance differs, as most people quickly notice, is his black, swollen left arm that gets progressively more bloated towards the shoulder, where it ends in a massive lump of black flesh with red veins that pulse to the beat of Amnayel's heart. The fingers on his left hand have also grown claws, which allow Amnayel to summon shadowy flames at his whim, although when he's in control of himself, he seldom chooses to do so.
What's that lump on your arm? Long ago, Amnayel was tasked with defeating a minor demon lord named Shivastaba, a great, black ghast that could warp the flesh of others. Shivastaba was origionally a ghoul under the control of the demon lord Orcus, but grew to be quite powerful by feeding on demon flesh. Shivastaba eventually found his way to the material plane and went on a rampage, causing a powerful cleric to beseech the gods for aid.
That aid came in the form of Amnayel, who came ready to bear his sword against the darkness. He and Shivastaba fought tooth and nail for three days and nights, ending with Amnayel plunging his sword through Shivastaba's heart. However, Shivastaba didn't die; instead, he attatched his body to Amnayel's left arm, becoming the black mass of flesh, and going into a semi-dormant state.
Shivastaba's demons were routed back to the Abyss, but for Amnayel, the problem remained. Shivastaba was still very much alive, so how should he deal with it?
A Life of Exile. The first thing Amnayel tried, obviously, was to cut the arm off. However, this didn't work, as most of the arm came off, but a vein full of blackened ichor kept the arm attatched and proved too tough to cut. So, for the time being, Amnayel sent word to his surperiors in Mount Celestia that he wasn't coming back, for fear of bringing a powerful demon onto the plane, even going so far as to lose his commune and raise dead spells, since they connect to that plane. Now, he wanders the world, hoping to find some holy artifact that can either purify or sever his arm.
Amnayel has also learned to avoid combat, because when he engages with another creature, Shivastaba's slumber is stirred, and can take posession of his body, which leads to Amnayel awakening to a scene of reckless carnage. This change in particular has been tough- a planetar is meant to be the sword of a god, after all- but Amnayel has confidence that this temporary lifestyle change will help to rid his body of the evil.
Immortal Nature. Amnayel doesn't require food, drink, or sleep.

Posted Aug 28, 2024Hey everyone! Noticed a small problem with this one after I published it:
While not under Shivastaba's control, Shadowflame should deal 22 (5d8) necrotic damage, not 27 (6d8). Sorry about that!
