Description
A Massive, Multicolored, metallic dragon usually found in dark areas, that breathes lightning and force, with eyes as red as hot coals and walks on its wings and back legs. Its body structure resembles that of a wyvern's. It glows with a sort of dark fire around it, symbolizing its power.
The Plane on which Asyyal resides is similar to the material world, but is twisted and corrupted. The Towns are inhabited with Creatures of the abyss, and it is almost always storming. In the brief times however, when the storms are cleared, a bright yellow sun shines, and covers the less corrupted areas with grass and forests. But it never lasts. Few can venture to this plane, and live to tell the tale, though if you manage to escape this plane after encountering him, have been known to return coated in armor made from his scales, and a weapon of their choice fashioned from his spines.
This beast is a ancient creature, and was one of the most powerful dragons, but he still feared the Dragon Queen, Tiamat. But one day, the current inhabitants of the Material World invaded, and banished Tiamat to Hell. However, even with his arch nemesis gone, he was soon banished to the abyss. As it plummeted, several demons in between the Surface and the Abyss become fused into his soul, causing him to gain more power. When he finally reached the bottom, he had so many demons in his soul, that he became considered a demonic god, and became powerful enough, that he felt he could easily kill Tiamat. The cave in which he resides was formed when Asyyal crashed into the floor of the abyss, causing a earthquake so devastating, it is said to have leveled the tallest mountain, and filled the deepest ravine.
Recently, people have begun to follow him, Paladins swearing oaths to him, Clerics joining, Warlocks making deals, and even reports of a sorcerous bloodline descending from him. Even several accounts of him being spotted in the material plane have surfaced, always claiming that one of his descendants, a sorceress named Fracta is always with him.
Even though this body is incredibly powerful, anyone who has tried to sense a soul in it has failed, sensing that it is simply a puppet of a far greater being. Indeed, it seems that Asyyal's true body is not physical, but his godly soul.
(Note, made just for fighting Tiamat, this thing would be near impossible to kill.)
Lair and Lair Actions
A cave, Centered inside of a crater, with signs of great struggles all around, loose rocks, and skeletons of long dead adventurers.
Lair Actions
On initiative count 20 (losing initiative ties), the Abyssal Dragon takes a lair action to cause one of the following effects; the Abyssal Dragon can’t use the same effect two rounds in a row:
- A tremor shakes the lair in a 60-foot radius around the dragon. Each creature other than the dragon on the ground in that area must succeed on a DC 25 Dexterity saving throw or be knocked prone.
- Magma erupts from a point on the ground the dragon can see within 120 feet of it, creating a 20-foot-high, 5-foot-radius geyser. Each creature in the geyser’s area must make a DC 25 Dexterity saving throw, taking 56 (16d6) fire damage on a failed save, or half as much damage on a successful one.
- Volcanic gases form a cloud in a 20-foot-radius sphere centered on a point the dragon can see within 120 feet of it. The sphere spreads around corners, and its area is lightly obscured. It lasts until initiative count 20 on the next round. Each creature that starts its turn in the cloud must succeed on a DC 23 Constitution saving throw or be poisoned until the end of its turn. While poisoned in this way, a creature is incapacitated.
- The Shadows within the cave Stab at any creature within 30 feet of them, dealing 52 (8d12) Piercing damage. Each eligible target is stabbed at 3 times, and Must make a DC 20 Dexterity saving throw for each attack, or take the damage.
Regional Effects
The region containing a legendary Abyssal Dragon’s lair is Full of thunderstorms and tornadoes, which creates one or more of the following effects:
- Gargantuan Elementals commonly form nearby
- Cracks form allowing lava to slowly seep through within 1 mile of the lair..
If the Abyssal Dragon dies, these effects fade over the course of 1d4 Years

Posted Mar 12, 2024nah, you're making me debate on having the actual god that is Asyyal have a statblock, that is so ridiculosly overpowered, he straight up can't be beaten even if the DM just uses the worst attack.

Posted Mar 12, 2024Challenge? You do realize that like, the Max plus on a save is maybe +10, on stuff like strength with the Storm Giants Belt. I mean, if you need a ridiculously OP set of gear to give them, I can publish three items real quick.

Posted Mar 13, 2024Yeah. So let's say you're proficient in Wisdom saving throws at level 20, and you have a 30 wisdom because SOMEHOW some god granted it to you, or you have lived for hundreds of years and you keep reusing a Tome of Understanding every 100 years. Let's also say there is a paladin in the party, who is at least at level 6 (for Aura of protection).
The paladin's aura of protection gives you at least +1 on saves, or even more, depending on how high his Charisma is, so your wisdom save modifier is you proficiency bonus + your wisdom modifier + the Paladin's Charisma modifier, which is anywhere from +17 on wisdom saves to +26 (depending on the Paladin's Charisma modifier). Even if the Paladin's Charisma is low, Aura of protection gives you a minimum bonus of +1.
There might be other wisdom-boosting methods to take your score past 20, but I'm just giving a certain situation just to show that it is possible to succeed on Nicol Bolas's DC 34 Wisdom saving throw. Still, not every player has been granted godlike strength or has lived for hundreds of years, and even those players will roll low on Wisdom saves sometimes. And of course, not every player has high wisdom, so yes, I would still say that Nicol Bolas's killing thing is a BIT overpowered.

Posted Mar 19, 2024Once again, there is no point. he still has access to Wish, meaning he auto wins.
Unless of course he wants the brutal beatdown from Asyyal's true form, his Soul.

Posted Mar 21, 2024Bruv, There is a reason why the DM generally doesn't get access to Wish. it's because they can quite literally just go: Your entire party instantaneously dies.

Posted Dec 27, 2024Most of the time, doing that is with something that they aren't even given a chance against, like a true god simply snapping his fingers, or the classic 'rocks fall, everyone dies'
