Traits

Legendary Resistance (3/Day)If Alagon fails a saving throw, he can choose to succeed instead.

Encased in Permafrost.

Alagon's skeletal remains and Festering Heart are encased in thick Permafrost, while Permafrost persists Alagon is immune to cold, and slashing(Magical and Non-Magical) damage. Alagon is resistant to all other forms of damage, but is vulnerable to Force damage. If Alagon receives 50 points of damage before the start of his next turn, the Permafrost will shatter. Doing so removes Permafrost's damage resistances, immunities, and reveals his Festering Heart.

Festering Heart.

Alagon's Festering Heart can only be targeted if Permafrost has been shattered. Festering Heart has a AC of 26 and can only be attacked if standing underneath Alagon when making a Attack Action. All sources of damage are considered vulnerable, and treated as a Critical Hit.

Hallowed Despair.

Whenever a creature fails a saving throw caused by Soul-Ash, a creeping despair fills it, growing in strength with each additional failed save and gaining a stack of Hallowed Despair. Hallowed Despair can stack up to a maximum of 3 times, and a stack can be removed by using a Healing Potion, being healed by a Healing Spell, or a Successful Persuasion Check that increases the creature's morale. If a creature fails a saving throw caused by Soul-Ash while at 3 stacks of Hallowed Despair, they become unwilling to fight gaining Disadvantage on all Actions, Bonus Actions, and Reactions until Healed by a Healing Spell of 5th level or higher. Each stack of Hallowed Despair adds a additional 1d6 of Psychic Damage caused by Soul-Ash and increases the success of the saving throw needed by 1.

1 Stack - 7 (2d6) Psychic Damage, DC 16 Wisdom Saving Throw
2 Stacks - 10 (3d6) Psychic Damage, DC 17 Wisdom Saving Throw
3 Stacks - 14 (4d6) Psychic Damage, DC 18 Wisdom Saving Throw

Actions

Multiattack.

Alagon can use his Frightful Presence. He then makes three attacks: one with his bite and two with his claws.

Bite.

Melee Weapon Attack: +14 to hit, reach 15 ft., one target. Hit: 19 (2d10 + 8) piercing damage plus 10 (3d6) necrotic damage.

Claw.

Melee Weapon Attack: +14 to hit, reach 10 ft., one target. Hit: 22 (4d6 + 8) slashing damage.

Tail.

Melee Weapon Attack: +14 to hit, reach 20 ft., one target. Hit: 17 (2d8 + 8) bludgeoning damage.

Frightful Presence.

Each creature of the dragon's choice that is within 120 feet of the dragon and aware of it must succeed on a DC 19 Wisdom saving throw or become frightened for 1 minute. Additionally, on a failed save they take 5 (2d4) Cold damage and their movement is halved. A creature can repeat the saving throw at the end of each of its turns, ending the effect on itself on a success. If a creature's saving throw is successful or the effect ends for it, the creature is immune to the dragon's Frightful Presence for the next 24 hours.

Breath of Chill Death (Recharge 5-6).

Alagon exhales a breath of freezing Soul-Ash in a 90-foot cone. Each creature in that area must make a DC 22 Constitution saving throw, taking 49 (9d10) Cold damage on a failed save and suffer the Failed saving throw effect of Soul-Ash, or half as much damage on a successful save with no effect from Soul-Ash.

Legendary Actions

Alagon can take 3 legendary actions, choosing from the options below. Only one legendary action option can be used at a time and only at the end of another creature's turn. Alagon regains spent legendary actions at the start of its turn.

Gust of Soul-Ash: Alagon swipes his tail, stirring up Soul-Ash and blowing it in a straight line 10 feet wide and 60 long. Any creature hit by the Gust makes a DC 17 Strength saving throw, on a failed save creature is pushed back 15 feet and is effected by Soul-Ash. Creature is not pushed back, nor effected by Soul-Ash on a success.

Leaping Dive: Alagon flicks his wings and leaps up to 30 feet into the air. Alagon then dives to a space that he can see within 50 feet crashing onto the ground causing a shockwave to all creatures within a 10 foot radius to make a DC 18 Dexterity saving throw, and take 27 (6d8) Bludgeoning damage and be knocked prone. Receive half damage and not knocked prone on a success.

Frozen Wings: Alagon beats his wings. Each creature within 15 ft. of him must succeed on a DC 18 Dexterity saving throw or take 15 (2d6 + 8) bludgeoning damage and be knocked prone. Alagon can then fly up to half his flying speed.

Mythic Actions

Regional Effects

The region that Alagon, Dragon of Soul-Ash is attacking is warped by the creature's presence, which creates one or more of the following effects:

  • Soul-Ash Snowfall While Alagon, Dragon of Soul-Ash is attacking a region, tasteless black snow known as Soul-Ash will begin to fall from the sky in a 100 foot radius around Alagon. Soul-Ash that is consumed, absorbed, or purposely inhaled wracks the creature in painful visions of lost souls felled by Alagon. The creature takes 1d6 psychic damage and makes a DC 18 Wisdom saving throw, on a success the creature is empowered by the memory of a lost soul, gaining advantage on their next Attack Role towards Alagon. On a Failed save, grief and madness consumes them causing their next Attack Role to be targeted towards the nearest creature.
  • Aura of Chill Death The region Alagon, Dragon of Soul-Ash is attacking becomes wreathed in a Aura of Chill Death up to 2 miles. The Aura's range becomes weaker as Alagon loses Hit Points. This range is reduced to a 1 Mile range when at Half Health, and a 40ft radius once Alagon reaches 50 remaining Hit Points. Aura of Chill Death radiates a wave of pressure that creates freezing pain in any creature's bones within range causing them to have disadvantage on Constitution and Strength saving throws while within range of Aura of Chill Death.
If Alagon, Dragon of Soul-Ash dies, the effects begin to dissipate over the next 1d4 Days.

Description

Gargantuan sized skeletal dragon covered in thick ice/permafrost with a still faintly beating heart seen through his ribcage.

This is one of the final boss encounters that I have planned for my upcoming campaign that I am building, I'm very new to this as this is my first campaign that I am DMing where I have only played limited as a player instead so I apologize if it is done poorly or if things seem to not make sense. Alagon is a reincarnated dragon that has been forcefully recruited by my BBEG to attack the elemental plane of fire(My BBEG wants to absorb all of the elemental planes and consume their power and essence for himself to become the one mighty power and try and control all the realms)He was a ancient dragon that tormented and slain hundreds, if not thousands, of adventurers/thieves/heros/challengers/dragons/etc alike and wherever he goes a blackened snowfall travels with him. The "snowflakes" are imbued with the souls and lifeforce of every living creature he has slain and keeps them falling around him as a reminder of his strength to strike fear into any players that would dare attempt to send him back to the grave. Incredibly strong willed and refuses to backdown or retreat, Alagon will fight whoever approaches him or mocks his power and will not rest until someone joins the Soul-Ash or he finally gets to rest.

Lair and Lair Actions

When fighting inside his lair, Alagon, Dragon of Soul-Ash can invoke the Soul-Ash to take lair actions. On initiative count 20 (losing initiative ties), Alagon, Dragon of Soul-Ash can take one lair action to cause one of the following effects:

Feast of Lost Souls: Alagon inhales deeply, bringing in all Soul-Ash within a 40 foot radius, all creatures in range make a DC 17 Strength saving throw receiving the effect of Soul-Ash and be pulled 15 feet towards Alagon, creatures are not pulled on a success. Additionally, Soul-Ash consumed by Alagon brings a disturbing joy remembering all the souls felled by him and infusing his body with their despair, restoring the Permafrost around his skeletal remains and Festering Heart regaining the Encased in Permafrost effect. Soul-Ash consumed this way disappears and has no effect on any creatures until the next Lair Action.

Screams of The Damned: Soul-Ash within the lair radiates sorrow and guilt as their memories flood the minds of every creature that is within 5 feet of Soul-Ash Snowfall and make a DC 18 Wisdom Saving throw taking 22 (4d10) Psychic Damage and losing half of their movement speed. Take half damage and lose no movement speed on a success.

Rain of Chill Death: Moisture builds rapidly in the air as Large Icicles appear in a 60 foot radius and begin to rain down on all creatures. Creatures make a DC 16 Dexterity saving throw and take 19 (3d12) Cold damage, taking half damage on a success. Icicles shatter upon hitting the ground causing difficult terrain. Moving on shattered icicles causes 2 (1d4) per 5 feet of movement, Icicles remain until the next Lair Action or creatures can spend a Action to clear Icicles within a 10 foot radius around them. Icicles hit Alagon, adding 20 additional points to Encased in Permafrost's effect, bringing the requirement to 70 points of damage to shatter the Permafrost.

Alagon can't repeat an effect until they have all been used, and he can't use the same effect two rounds in a row.
