Traits

Amorphous. The Zygal can move through a space as narrow as 1 inch wide without squeezing.

Corrosive Form. A creature that touches the Zygal or hits it with a melee attack while within 5 feet of it takes 7 (2d6) acid damage.

Spider Climb. The Zygal can climb difficult surfaces, including upside down on ceilings, without needing to make an ability check.

False Appearance. While the Zygal remains motionless, it is indistinguishable from an oily puddle or patch of slime.

Actions

Pseudopod. Melee Weapon Attack: +4 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 6 (1d8 + 2) bludgeoning damage plus 7 (2d6) acid damage.

Engulf. The Zygal moves up to its speed and can enter a Medium or smaller creature's space. The creature must succeed on a DC 12 Dexterity saving throw or be engulfed by the Zygal. The engulfed creature can't breathe, is restrained, and takes 10 (3d6) acid damage at the start of each of the Zygal's turns. When the Zygal moves, the engulfed creature moves with it. An engulfed creature can try to escape by taking an action to make a DC 12 Strength check. On a success, the creature escapes and enters a space of its choice within 5 feet of the Zygal.

.

Bonus Actions

Split (Recharge 5-6). The Zygal splits itself into two smaller versions of itself. Each new Zygal has half the hit points of the original Zygal and retains all of its statistics except for size, which becomes Small. If there is not enough space for both new Zygal forms, they occupy as much space as possible. If the original Zygal has 10 hit points or fewer after splitting, it is destroyed.

Retreat. The Zygal disengages from combat and retreats into the nearest available crevice or hiding spot within its movement range. This movement does not provoke opportunity attacks.

Reactions

Acidic Retaliation. When the Zygal is hit by a melee attack from a creature within 5 feet of it, it can use its reaction to release a burst of corrosive acid in retaliation. The attacking creature must make a DC 12 Dexterity saving throw, taking 7 (2d6) acid damage on a failed save, or half as much damage on a successful one.

Description

Zygals are amorphous oozes that dwell in dark, damp places, often lurking in caverns, sewers, or underground tunnels. They appear as viscous, oily puddles or patches of slime, easily mistaken for natural formations until they reveal their true nature. These oozes are highly corrosive, their touch burning through flesh and armor alike. They move with a disturbing fluidity, able to climb walls and ceilings effortlessly.

Zygals are opportunistic predators, lying in wait for unsuspecting prey to stumble into their domain. When threatened, they can engulf foes, slowly dissolving them in their acidic embrace. Despite lacking intelligence, they display a degree of cunning, often using stealth to surprise their prey before launching into a frenzied assault.

Adventurers should exercise caution when exploring areas rumored to be infested with Zygal, for these creatures are silent, deadly hunters, capable of reducing even the hardiest of adventurers to nothing but bones and slime.
