Amorphous. The bagman can move through a space as narrow as 1 inch wide without squeezing.
Baleful Shadows. The bagman darkens the area around its body in a 10-foot radius. Nonmagical light can’t illuminate this area of dim light.
Birth Anew. Over the course of an hour, the bagman can birth a new extension of itself after using its Devour Soul. The bagman shares the same mind with each of its extensions and can hear, see, and speak through any one of them, but it can only make one extension from each soul devoured. If the bagman is destroyed, all extensions immediately die. This extension appears like creature whose soul was devoured and shares the same appearance but is a unique creature with the following differences:
- Its creature type is aberration.
- It bears an inverted Mark of the Bag on its body.
- It does not require air, food, drink, or sleep.
- If it dies, it melts away and cannot be restored to life by any means.
Devour Soul. The bagman can eat the soul of a creature it has killed within the last hour, provided that creature bears the mark of the Bag and is not a Construct. The devouring requires the bagman to be within 5 feet of the corpse for at least 1 minute, after which it gains a number of Hit Dice (d8s) equal to half the creature’s number of Hit Dice. Roll those dice, and increase the bagman's hit points by the numbers rolled. A creature devoured by a bagman can be restored to life only by a true resurrection spell or wish spell. If the bagman has used Birth Anew to create an extension based on this creature's soul, it cannot be restored to life until that extension has died.
Magic Resistance. The bagman has advantage on saving throws against spells and other magical effects.
Rejuvenation. As long as a bag of holding, handy haversack, or portable hole exists in the universe, the bagman cannot permanently die. A destroyed bagman revives after 10d10 years in a random item from the list above with a new body and hit points replenished. Any hit points it had gained from Devour Soul are not carried over.
Siphoning Resistance (3/Day). If the bagman fails a saving throw, it can remove a Mark of the Bag from a creature within 60 feet of it to succeed instead.
Unusual Nature. The bagman doesn't require air, drink, or sleep.
Multiattack. The bagman makes one Bite attack and one Claw attack and uses Mark of the Bag.
Bite. Melee Weapon Attack: +11 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 38 (5d12 + 6) necrotic damage.
Claw. Melee Weapon Attack: +11 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 28 (4d10 + 6) force damage.
Mark of the Bag.The bagman targets one creature it can see within 30 feet of it. If the target isn’t a Construct, it must succeed on a DC 16 Charisma saving throw or take 13 (2d12) psychic damage and become frightened until the end of its next turn. The target’s hit point maximum is reduced by an amount equal to the psychic damage dealt, and the bagman regains hit points equal to half that amount. This reduction lasts until the target finishes a long rest. The target dies if its hit point maximum is reduced to 0. A creature that fails is also marked with the Mark of the Bag, taking the shape of a pouch with a swirl design emblazoned somewhere on its body. When the bagman uses Mark of the Bag on a marked creature, it can choose to inflict a level of exhaustion in place of dealing damage. The bagman is always aware of the exact location of a marked creature. The Mark of the Bag can only removed when the bagman dies or with a Greater Restoration spell or similar magic. Removing the Mark of the Bag will also remove all levels of exhaustion incurred from it.
Shadow Stealth. While in dim light or darkness, the bagman can take the Hide action.
The bagman can take 3 legendary actions, choosing from the options below. Only one legendary action option can be used at a time and only at the end of another creature’s turn. The bagman regains spent legendary actions at the start of its turn.
Mark. The bagman uses Mark of the Bag.
Teleport (Costs 2 Actions). The bagman magically teleports to an unoccupied space within 5 feet of a marked creature it can see within 60 feet of it.
Description
Long before it was eventually retold as the tale of the bogeyman was the tale of the bagman. This creature was whispered in fear universally across all walks of life, from commoner to noble, adventurer to sage, and humanoid to fiend. While many a rumor exists on what the bagman, the sinister truth is that most of its victims don't live long enough to reveal its true nature to others.
The bagman thrives and feeds off of fear. It exists on its own plane called Bag World that connects to all bags of holding, handy haversacks, and portable holes in the universe. It travels through these different items in search of prey. When it decides on a victim, it will first place its mark upon them, usually while they are sleeping in the night. Then, night after night, it will terrorize its victim with its presence, leaving cryptic messages, revealing its eyes through their bags, and stealing their belongings. When the victim eventually breaks down in terror or attempts to throw away their bag, the bagman emerges to drag them inside to Bag World, where it kills them and consumes their soul and flesh. The bagman then births a twisted extension of itself in its victim's image to assist in gathering more victims.
