Spellcasting: Zalaster is a 3rd-level spellcaster. His spellcasting ability is Charisma (spell save DC 13, +3 to hit with spell attacks). He has the following sorcerer spells prepared:

Wild Magic Surge: After Zalaster casts a sorcerer spell of 1st level or higher, roll a d20. If you roll a 1, roll on the Wild Magic Surge table.

Tides of Chaos: Once per day, Zalaster can gain advantage on one attack roll, ability check, or saving throw. After doing so, a Wild Magic Surge immediately occurs.

Actions

Whip Lash:

  • Attack: Melee Weapon Attack: +4 to hit, reach 10 ft., one target.
  • Hit: 1d4 + 2 slashing damage. If the target is a creature other than an undead or a construct, Zalaster can choose to have the target make a Strength saving throw (DC 13) or be pulled up to 5 feet closer to him.

Crackling Strike: (Recharge 5-6)

  • Attack: Melee Weapon Attack: +4 to hit, reach 10 ft., one target.
  • Hit: 1d4 + 2 slashing damage plus 1d6 lightning damage. On a hit, the target must succeed on a Constitution saving throw (DC 13) or be stunned until the end of their next turn.

Ensnaring Lash:

  • Attack: Melee Weapon Attack: +4 to hit, reach 10 ft., one target.
  • Hit: 1d4 + 2 slashing damage, and the target is grappled (escape DC 13). Until the grapple ends, the target is restrained, and Zalaster can't use his whip on another target.

Terrifying Presence: (Only once per combat)

  • Zalaster exudes a terrifying aura, demanding attention. Each creature of Zalaster’s choice within 30 feet of him and aware of him must succeed on a Wisdom saving throw (DC 13) or become frightened for 1 minute. A frightened creature can repeat the saving throw at the end of each of its turns, ending the effect on itself on a success.
Bonus Actions

Whip Crack: Zalaster can use his bonus action to make a single attack with his whip. This attack has a reach of 10 feet and, on a hit, deals 1d4 slashing damage plus 1d4 necrotic damage.

Dark Command: Zalaster can use a bonus action to issue a command to one of his minions within sight. The minion can immediately use its reaction to make one weapon attack or move up to half its speed.

Mystic Shift: Once on each of his turns, Zalaster can use a bonus action to teleport up to 15 feet to an unoccupied space he can see. This sudden shift is accompanied by a brief swirl of dark energy.

Reactions

Retort: If Zalaster is targeted by a spell that requires him to make a saving throw, he can use his reaction to cast a cantrip as a retort if the spell effect is successfully saved against.

 Arcane Riposte: When a creature within 5 feet of Zalaster hits him with a melee attack, he can use his reaction to unleash a burst of arcane energy. The attacker must succeed on a Dexterity saving throw (DC 13) or take 1d6 force damage.

Deflect Attack: When hit by a ranged attack, Zalaster can use his reaction to roll a d20. On a roll of 11 or higher, the attack misses as he deftly uses his whip to knock the projectile away.

Description

Zalaster, a once-renowned performer, had descended into madness and cruelty. His circus, once a place of joy and amazement, had transformed into a prison for those who worked under him. The ringmaster, with a twisted smile, wielded a whip that crackled with dark energy, a gift from a dubious pact. His eyes, once sparkling with delight, now glowed with a malevolent fire.

Zalaster's control over his troupe is absolute. He uses fear, manipulation, and dark magic to keep his performers in line. Beatings are common, and those who try to escape find themselves facing inexplicable misfortunes, as if cursed.
