Warding Bond. As long as her ice devil bodyguard is alive and within 60 ft of her, Avarice has the effects of a warding bond spell.
Special Equipment. Avarice wields a staff of frost with 10 charges (see “Actions” below), and a Ring of Warding Bond (Recipient), its partner equipped by her personal ice devil bodyguard.
Sculpt Spells. Avarice can create pockets of relative safety within the effects of her evocation spells. When she casts an evocation spell that affects other creatures that she can see, she can choose a number of them equal to 1 + the spell's level. The chosen creatures automatically succeed on their saving throws against the spell, and they take no damage if they would normally take half damage on a successful save.
Potent Cantrips. Avarice’s damaging cantrips affect even creatures that avoid the brunt of the effect. When a creature succeeds on a saving throw against her cantrips, the creature takes half the cantrip's damage (if any) but suffers no additional effect from the cantrip.
Empowered Evocation. Avarice can add her spellcasting modifier (minimum of +1) to the damage roll of any wizard evocation spell that she casts. The damage bonus applies to one damage roll of a spell, not multiple rolls.
Overchannel (1/day). Avarice can increase the power of her simpler spells. When she casts a wizard spell of 5th level or lower that deals damage and isn't a cantrip, she can deal maximum damage with that spell.
Spellcasting. Avarice is a 10th-level wizard spellcaster. Her spellcasting ability is Intelligence (spell save DC 18; +10 to hit with spell attacks). She has the following wizard spells prepared:
Cantrips (at will): fire bolt+ (see “Actions” below), mage hand, message, minor illusion, prestidigitation, shocking grasp+
1st level (4 slots): detect magic, mage armor, magic missile+, shield
2nd level (3 slots): flaming sphere, knock, scorching ray+, silence
3rd level (3 slots): counterspell, fireball+, fly
4th level (3 slots): banishment, fire shield+
5th level (2 slots): Bigby’s hand+, Rary’s telepathic bond
6th level (1 slot): chain lightning+
+Evocation Spells
Spellcasting. Avarice is a 5th-level warlock spellcaster and thus has 2 third level spell slots. Her spellcasting ability is Charisma (spell save DC 17; +9 to hit with spell attacks). She has the following warlock spells prepared:
Cantrips: eldritch blast, Toll the Dead[/spell]
1st level: Armor of Agathys, Hellish Rebuke
2nd level: Misty Step
3rd level: Counterspell, ..., Gaseous Form
Repelling Blast. When you hit a creature with eldritch blast, you can push the creature up to 10 feet away from you in a straight line.
Grasp of Hadar. Once on each of your turns when you hit a creature with your eldritch blast, you can move that creature in a straight line 10 feet closer to you.
Icy Doom. When Avarice dies, her corpse freezes for 9 days, during which time it can’t be thawed, harmed by fire, animated, or raised from the dead.
Fire Bolt (Cantrip). Ranged Spell Attack: +10 to hit, range 120 ft., one target. Hit: 21 (3d10+5) fire damage.
Shocking Grasp (Cantrip). Melee Spell Attack: +10 to hit, range 5 ft., one target. Hit: 18 (3d8+5) lightning damage.
Eldritch Blast (Cantrip). Ranged Spell Attack: +9 to hit (3 beams), range 120 ft., one target. Hit: 9 (1d10+4) force damage.
Staff of Frost. While holding this staff, Avarice can expend 1 or more of its charges to cast one of the following spells from it (spell save DC 14): cone of cold (5 charges), fog cloud (1 charge), ice storm (4 charges), or wall of ice (4 charges). The staff regains 1d6 + 4 charges daily at dawn. If its last charge is expended, roll a d20; on a 1, the staff turns to water and is destroyed.
Banishing Rebuke (Recharges after a Long Rest). When Avarice is damaged by a creature that she can see within 60 feet of her, she can banish that creature to a frigid extradimensional prison for 1 minute. While there, the creature is incapacitated and takes 5 (1d10) cold damage at the start of each of its turns. At the end of each of its turns, the creature can make a DC 17 Charisma saving throw, escaping the prison on a success and reappearing in the space it left or in the nearest unoccupied space if that space is occupied. A creature that dies in the prison is trapped there indefinitely.
Counterspell. Avarice can expend a wizard spell slot (Lv3+) and cast Counterspell.
Hellish Rebuke. Avarice can expend a warlock spell slot and cast Hellish Rebuke at 3rd level. Hit: 22 (4d10) fire damage.
Shield. Avarice expends a spell slot to cast Shield.
Eldritch Blast (Cantrip). Avarice casts 1 beam of Eldritch Blast. Ranged Spell Attack: +9 to hit, range 120 ft., one target. Hit: 11 (1d10+4) force damage.
Cast a Spell (costs 2 actions). Avarice casts a spell of 3rd level or lower.
Staff of Frost. (costs 2 actions) Avarice can use her Staff of Frost.
Description
Companions. Avarice has a pair of loyal gargoyles named Gargle and Gurgle who serve her as bodyguards and scouts. Avarice uses her Rary’s telepathic bond spell to stay in telepathic contact with her gargoyles before sending them off on any mission. Avarice also has the support of the Knights of the Black Sword, if she needs to call on their talents. Once in Ythryn, she also has an Ice Devil (Spear Variant) body guard with a ring of warding bond paired with her.
Familiar. Avarice’s familiar throughout the adventure is a squawking raven named Skelm. It uses the raven stat block in the Monster Manual but is a fiend instead of a beast.
Tactics. Avarice will stay on her throne and let her ice devil bodyguard take care of the enemies. Her Ice Devil will put up an ice wall to protect her as soon as is appropriate and if the opportunity arises, Avarice will Overchannel an upcasted 5th Fireball for 65 damage (choosing to avoid hitting her allies)
Spellbook. Avarice’s spellbook has white leather covers and vellum pages. The tiefling’s personal sigil is burned into the front cover. The book contains the spells Avarice has prepared plus the following additional spells: burning hands, cone of cold, find familiar, ice storm, lightning bolt, rope trick, thunderwave, tongues, wall of fire, and wall of force.
