Special Abilities:
Blighted Aura: Constantly active, this aura extends to 10 feet around Boneguard. At the start of Boneguard’s turn, all creatures within this aura must succeed on a DC 13 Constitution saving throw or take 6 (2d6) necrotic damage. (Can be blown away with gust)
Frightful Presence: At the start of combat, Boneguard can unleash a horrifying roar. Each creature within 30 feet that can see or hear Boneguard must succeed on a DC 15 Wisdom saving throw or be frightened for 1 minute. A creature can repeat the saving throw at the end of each of its turns, with disadvantage if Boneguard is within line of sight, ending the effect on itself on a success.
Rending Claw: Melee Weapon Attack: +6 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 20 (2d10 + 6) slashing damage, and the target must succeed on a DC 14 Constitution saving throw or be paralyzed for 1 minute. The target can attempt the saving throw again at the end of each of its turns.
Bone Javelin: Ranged Weapon Attack: +8 to hit, range 30/90 ft., one target. Hit: 18 (2d10 + 8) piercing damage. This attack can skewer multiple enemies if they are in line, hitting the first two in range.
- Bone Surge: Boneguard elongates and sharpens his bone protrusions, increasing his reach. For the duration of his next turn, his melee attack range increases by 5 feet.
- Offensive Charge: Boneguard channels his energy to reinforce his bone protrusions, preparing for a powerful tackle. If Boneguard moves at least 10 feet straight toward a target and then hits it with a melee attack on the same turn, the attack deals an extra 4 (1d8) damage.
Bone Parry: When Boneguard is hit by a melee attack, he can use his bone protrusions to either deflect or lessen the impact of the attack. He adds +4 to his AC against that attack, potentially causing the attack to miss. If the attack still hits, the damage is reduced by half.
Opportunity Attack: Makes a mele attack against leaving his attack range - 5/10 ft.
Boneguard can take 3 legendary actions, choosing from the options below:
- Quick Slash (1 Action): Makes one Rending Claws attack.
- Bone Shrapnel (2 Actions): Boneguard explodes its bony protrusions, sending sharp fragments in all directions. All creatures within 10 feet must make a DC 16 Dexterity saving throw, taking 9 (3d6) slashing damage on a failed save, or half as much damage on a successful one.
- Summon Minions (3 Actions, can only be used once per combat): Boneguard summons 3-5 lesser ghouls. These ghouls attack immediately, adding to the chaos and distraction.
Description
Boneguard the Undying Sentinel is a ghastly figure shrouded in the remnants of ancient armor, his skeletal form adorned with the jagged protrusions of bone that serve both as protection and as deadly weapons. His eye sockets burn with a ghostly, unyielding light, a reflection of his eternal vigilance and undying duty.
Former Life and Transformation: Boneguard was once Durgan Stoutshield, a revered dwarven guardian of the fortress of Axeholme. Known for his unwavering loyalty and bravery, Durgan was the fortress's last line of defense during a catastrophic siege that saw the walls of Axeholme breached by a horde of malevolent forces. As the fortress fell, Durgan sacrificed his life in a heroic last stand, enabling a handful of his comrades to escape the onslaught.
Unbeknownst to all, the ground upon which Durgan fell was cursed, soaked with the dark magics of a necromancer who had targeted the fortress. As his blood mingled with the tainted earth, a dark transformation began. Over the centuries, Durgan's remains absorbed the corruptive energies, reanimating him not as the noble guardian he once was, but as Boneguard the Undying Sentinel.
Current Existence: Now stripped of his former identity but driven by a distorted echo of his protective instincts, Boneguard roams the ruins of Axeholme. He is bound to the fortress by the very magic that resurrected him, compelled to guard its ruins from all who dare to tread its cursed grounds. His mind, clouded by the centuries of isolation and the corruption of dark magic, perceives every intruder as an enemy, an invader to be repelled with ruthless aggression.
Boneguard is haunted by fragmented memories of his past life, which surface as fleeting visions of battles fought and brothers-in-arms lost. These memories fuel his rage and sorrow, driving him to fight with a chilling ferocity that belies his skeletal form.
