Traits

Shape Change: The doppelganger can use its action to transform into any humanoid or beast it has seen, or back to its true form. It can mimic specific individuals nearly perfectly.

Chromatic Scales: The skin of the doppelganger shifts colors dynamically, providing it with perfect camouflage. It has advantage on Stealth checks and can hide as a bonus action.

Venomous Mist: As an action, the Aquatic Doppelganger can release a cloud of venomous mist in a 15-foot radius centered on itself. Creatures caught in the mist must succeed on a DC 18 Constitution saving throw or be poisoned for 1 hour. On a successful save, creatures become blinded instead. The mist lasts for 1 minute or until dispersed by a strong wind.

Telepathic Suggestion: On each enemy's turn, the Aquatic Doppelganger can use its telepathy to speak directly to their mind, mimicking the effects of the message cantrip. It suggests that the enemy attacks their allies instead. The enemy must succeed on a DC 18 Wisdom saving throw or be compelled to obey the suggestion on their next turn. If the enemy takes damage from an ally before acting on the suggestion, they can repeat the saving throw to end the effect.

Actions

Multiattack: The doppelganger makes four attacks: three with its tentacles and one with its psychic lash.

Tentacle: Melee Weapon Attack: +12 to hit, reach 10 ft., one target. Hit: 20 (3d8 + 6) bludgeoning damage, and the target must succeed on a DC 18 Constitution saving throw or be stunned until the end of the doppelganger's next turn.

Psychic Lash: Ranged Psychic Attack: +11 to hit, range 60 ft., one target. Hit: 28 (4d10 + 6) psychic damage.

Reactions

Psionic Opportunist: If targeted by an effect that allows a saving throw, the doppelganger can roll a d6. On a roll of 4-6, it gains advantage on that saving throw. If it still takes damage, it can immediately use its reaction to make a psychic attack against the source of the damage.

Regeneration: The doppelganger regains 15 hit points at the start of its turn if it has at least 1 hit point.

Description

The Aquatic Doppelganger is a creature of mystique and terror, born from the darkest depths of the ocean. This enigmatic being blends the eerie intelligence of a humanoid with the otherworldly physiology of an octopus, creating a formidable predator whose mastery of disguise and manipulation is unparalleled.

Physically, the Aquatic Doppelganger can range from the size of a small human child to towering heights approaching that of a giant, depending on its need and the form it chooses to adopt. Its skin is a tapestry of shifting colors and patterns, serving both as camouflage and a means of silent communication among its kind. The creature's body is flexible and robust, supported by a skeletal structure that allows it to squeeze through tight spaces or expand to intimidate foes.

Each limb of the Aquatic Doppelganger is a marvel of evolution, equipped with retractable tentacles that end in barbed suckers. These limbs are not only tools for movement but also deadly weapons, capable of delivering bone-crushing grips or delicate manipulations. From the crown of its head extends a long, prehensile tail, often used to anchor itself or manipulate objects at a distance.

Behaviorally, the Aquatic Doppelganger is a solitary creature, preferring the cold, quiet solace of the deep sea. It is a patient hunter, using its ability to mimic the appearance and behaviors of other sea creatures to approach its prey undetected. Despite its fearsome abilities, it is a creature of intellect, preferring to avoid unnecessary confrontations through cunning and deception.

The Aquatic Doppelganger's role in its ecosystem is as complex as the creature itself. It is both predator and scavenger, controlling populations of other marine creatures while also cleaning up the remnants left by other predators. Its reproductive strategy is unique; it can lay eggs that double as defensive mechanisms, releasing toxic clouds when threatened.

In the realm of myth and legend, the Aquatic Doppelganger stirs feelings of awe and dread. To sailors and fishermen, it is a harbinger of misfortune and mystery, often blamed for unexplained disappearances and strange phenomena at sea. To scholars and adventurers, it represents a living puzzle, an embodiment of the untamed and unknown aspects of the natural world.
