Description
The larger, tougher and much more hostile cousin of tooth fairies. One of their only common traits with tooth fairies are their nocturnal nature. They spend most time avoiding live creatures, instead seeking out fresh cadavers of humanoids if close by. These creatures will often raid graveyards and make their homes nearby, leaving sites in disarray trying to find their prize. But if the opportunity presents itself and if hungry enough, they will attack wandering adventurers and travelers. Feasting on the flesh, taking the bones, but leaving the coins and valuables they carried. The bone fairy will use magical means to hide itself, waiting in ambush, even stalking prey until night to strike.
With the bones of their victims, especially tough ones, they fashion armor into their bodies. Their natural skin tone is usually dark grey in color with long sharp fangs protruding from their lips.
Lair and Lair Actions
The bone fairy's lair is comprised of large holes carved into trees, hidden by illusion magic. A creature may spot the illusion on a DC 14 Arcana check. Once inside, a deep hole burrows down under the tree's roots. Claw marks can be seen due to the creature clawing its way out of its lair. The floor on the inside are covered in neatly piled bones, sorted by placement and sizes. Walls usually have skulls of various humanoids pushed into the soil, holding them in place. Multiple bone fairies can make the same lair their home, even some tooth fairies can be found dwelling in the lair for protection from their ferocious cousins. Usually bone fairies make simple sleeping nests from surrounding soil, leaves, grass and tree limbs.
Lair Actions
On initiative count 20 (losing initiative ties), the bone fairy takes a lair action to cause one of the following effects; the bone fairy can’t use the same effect two rounds in a row:
- A 50-foot square area of ground within 80 feet of the bone fairy becomes difficult terrain as vines and roots sprout in the vicinity.
- Bones littering the floor and skulls in the walls fly towards each creature of the bone fairy's choice within 10 feet of the piles or walls. Each creature must succeed on a DC 15 Dexterity saving throw or take 1d6 bludgeoning damage.
