Amphibious. The angler child aberration can breathe air and water.
Lure. The creature can emit a dim light from its lure, resembling a small child's doll. This light extends for 60 feet and is always active unless the creature chooses to suppress it.
Camouflage: While underwater and not moving, the angler child aberration has advantage on Dexterity (Stealth) checks made to hide.
Terrifying Presence: Any creature that starts its turn within 30 feet of the angler child aberration must succeed on a DC 15 Wisdom saving throw or be frightened for 1 minute. A frightened creature can repeat the saving throw at the end of each of its turns, ending the effect on itself on a success.
Multiattack. The angler child aberration makes three attacks: one with its bite and two with its tentacles.
Bite. Melee Weapon Attack: +10 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 20 (3d8 + 6) piercing damage. If the target is a Medium or smaller creature, it is grappled (escape DC 16). Until this grapple ends, the target is restrained, and the angler child aberration can't bite another target.
Tentacle. Melee Weapon Attack: +10 to hit, reach 15 ft., one target. Hit: 16 (2d8 + 6) bludgeoning damage, and the target is grappled (escape DC 16). Until this grapple ends, the target is restrained, and the angler child aberration can't use the same tentacle on another target.
Swallow. The angler child aberration makes one bite attack against a Medium or smaller creature it is grappling. If the attack hits, the target is swallowed, and the grapple ends. The swallowed target is blinded and restrained, it has total cover against attacks and other effects outside the angler child aberration, and it takes 21 (6d6) acid damage at the start of each of the angler child aberration's turns. If the angler child aberration takes 30 damage or more on a single turn from a creature inside it, the angler child aberration must succeed on a DC 15 Constitution saving throw at the end of that turn or regurgitate the swallowed creature, which falls prone in a space within 10 feet of the angler child aberration. If the angler child aberration dies, a swallowed creature is no longer restrained by it and can escape from the corpse using 20 feet of movement, exiting prone.
Hypnotic Lure (Recharge 5-6). The angler child aberration emits a mesmerizing pattern of lights from its lure, forcing each creature of its choice within 30 feet that can see the light to make a DC 15 Wisdom saving throw or become charmed for 1 minute. While charmed in this way, the creature is incapacitated and has a speed of 0. The creature can repeat the saving throw at the end of each of its turns, ending the effect on itself on a success. If a creature's saving throw is successful or the effect ends for it, the creature is immune to the angler child aberration's Hypnotic Lure for the next 24 hours.
Ensnaring Grasp: The angler child aberration can use its bonus action to command one of its tentacles to lash out at a creature within 15 feet. The target must make a DC 15 Strength saving throw or be grappled by the tentacle until the start of the angler child aberration's next turn. While grappled in this way, the creature's speed becomes 0.
Distortion Field. When the angler child aberration takes damage from a ranged attack, it can use its reaction to distort space around it, causing the attack to miss. The attacker must make a DC 15 Dexterity saving throw. On a failed save, the attack misses the angler child aberration and strikes a random target within 30 feet of it, determined by rolling a d8 to select a direction (1 for north, 2 for northeast, and so on). If there are no valid targets in the chosen direction, the attack misses harmlessly.
Description
Appearance: The Angler Child Aberration is a grotesque amalgamation of an angler fish and a small humanoid child, twisted by aberrant forces into a nightmarish form. Its bloated body, covered in slimy scales, is reminiscent of the fish-like features of an angler, while its disproportionately large head resembles that of a child, complete with vacant, doll-like eyes. Its mouth, lined with rows of sharp teeth, gapes wide open, revealing a cavernous throat capable of swallowing prey whole. From its forehead protrudes a bioluminescent lure, pulsating with an eerie glow that mesmerizes its victims.
Behavior: This aberration lurks in the dark depths of underwater caverns and subterranean tunnels, using its hypnotic lure to attract unsuspecting prey. Cunning and ruthless, it employs stealth and deception to ambush its victims, relying on its immense strength and agility to overwhelm them. It is a solitary hunter, preferring the solitude of its dark lair where it can lie in wait for its next meal.
Abilities: The Angler Child Aberration possesses formidable physical strength, capable of crushing prey within its powerful grasp. Its tentacles, tipped with barbed appendages, are adept at ensnaring and restraining foes, rendering them helpless against its onslaught. Additionally, its hypnotic lure mesmerizes and incapacitates those who dare gaze upon it, leaving them vulnerable to its deadly attacks.
Origins: The origins of the Angler Child Aberration are shrouded in mystery and dread. Some speculate that it is the result of twisted experimentation by mad cultists or malevolent entities from beyond the stars. Others believe it to be a manifestation of the darkest fears and nightmares of the abyss, given form by the chaotic energies of the Far Realm. Whatever its origins may be, encountering this aberration is a harrowing experience that few survive to recount.
