Description
Primal Wyverns are the evolutionary bridge between true dragons and wyverns. They have the body structure of a wyvern but without the stinging barb at the end of its tail. it can use its Breath similar to that of true dragons but unlike true dragon's breath attacks it is very unstable and can be explosive. Ancient Primal Wyverns are massive being almost 180ft long from tail to shoulder, and can stand around 90 ft in height at the shoulder with a wingspan of 265ft and a neck around 40ft long but some reports can get their size much larger.
Big Game Hunters. Primal Wyverns hunt any and all creatures that are the size of a bear or larger but their favorite food is other draconic creatures, primarily true dragons and their own kind, due to this they rarely attack humanoid settlements unless it is struggling with finding ample food sources when fully grown, traders that travel with cattle or other large creatures run the risk of attack from a primal wyvern when they enter its territory.
Ancient Growth and Reproduction. Primal Wyverns mating and courting is extremely rare, primal wyverns will only mate when they reach sexual maturity around 300 years old, once ready males will leave the safety of their lair in search of a female. once found it must make a brilliant display of low grumbles and color with its breath. if successful it will mate with the female for life and the female will move into the males lair bringing all of its wealth and trophies, if two males are vying over a female many times it will lead to a destructive and deadly fight leading to either one or both of them dying in the process, if a female is displeased by the courting of a male it will attack the male which leads to a similar outcome. females take approximately 20 years to lay a batch of eggs and the size of the clutch can range in size between one to four eggs and take 25 years for it to hatch in the right environment, eggs will hatch if it is put and kept in extreme elemental energy that corresponds with the primal wyvern type, the egg can only began the hatching process if it has a decent amount of draconic blood spilled on it every year to keep it from being destroyed by the concentrated amount of elemental energy needed for it to hatch, if it is removed during this process, it can lie dormant for up to 10,000 years until it has the right environmental needs. once the eggs hatch both parents will care for and protect their young violently for 5 years, afterwards the young will leave the nest, during this 50 year time the female will not have any more eggs and will wait 20 more years until it will have another clutch. the babies will stay in the territory of the mother and father until they reach young stage and will then leave to wonder the world. Primal Wyverns at this stage grow fast when given room, ample food and freedom making young and adult primal wyverns very dangerous attacking anything it sees as a food source including towns and villages and will reach their adult stage around the age of 35 and will not make a lair until it reaches the ancient stage at 260 years old. only then will it find a place to set up its lair and the process starts all over again. the longest lived primal wyvern was around 600 years old.
Mount of Kings. It is rare but some can tame and even more rare breed primal wyverns but the process most often leads to the death of the tamer or the destruction of cities. wild primal wyverns cannot be tamed by any means which requires those that wish to tame one to take eggs. the process to hatch an egg of a primal wyvern is not well known and only few know how to breed them, those that do know keep the knowledge close and rarely speak about it. however some due offer their knowledge for the right amount of coin. once it is hatched in a domestic it will bond with the first humanoid it sees and serve it and the bloodline of the person until it dies of old age or no more of the persons bloodline exist. those who are able to get two primal wyverns eggs of sperate clutches to try and keep a breed more but the process takes many generations for this to achieve. but for those who are successful have one of these creatures raw primal draconic power, they could change the fate of cities or countries but could also bring ruin to those they see fit.
Primal Fire. Fire Primal Wyverns are the second most aggressive subspecies and sadly the most common, they come in all different types of colors but their most common colors are Black, Red, Gold, and Orange.
Lair and Lair Actions
Primal Wyvern dwell anywhere with ample food supply and in wild areas away from civilization. A Primal Wyvern’s lair can be in a dark cave, a costal cliff, a desert ravine, a mountain outcrop, a high hill in rolling grasslands, a massive tree or broken down trees built in a nest, but their favorite type of lair is ruins of past or current civilizations. The lair is littered with bones of large creatures like mammoths and giants but primarily bones of draconic creatures that is has brought back to its lair. if a Primal Wyvern kills a draconic creature and finds it horde no matter they type of horde it will bring it back to add to its collation.
Lair Actions
On initiative count 20 (losing initiative ties), the Primal Wyvern takes a lair action to cause one of the following effects; the Primal Wyvern can’t use the same effect two rounds in a row:
- Elemental energy of the Primal Wyvern's type erupt violently. the Primal choses two points in its lair, Any creature on the ground within 15 feet of a point of its choosing must succeed on a DC 18 Dexterity saving throw or take 2d12 of either cold, lightning, fire, poison, or acid and be knocked prone, on a success they take half damage and aren't knocked prone.
- A cloud of elemental energy fills a 30-foot-radius sphere centered on a point the Primal Wyvern's chooses within 120 feet of it. The cloud spreads around corners and remains until the Primal Wyvern dismisses it as an action, uses this lair action again, or dies. The cloud is heavily obscured. Any creature in the cloud that isn't the primal wyvern is blinded by magical means and has disadvantage on Wisdom and Dexterity saving throws and checks.
Regional Effects
The region containing a Ancient Primal Wyvern’s lair is affected by its natural elemental presence, which creates the following effects:
- draconic creatures avoid the lair by all costs staying 50 miles away, the Primal Wyvern knows if a draconic creature is in its domain.
- thick and rare magical plants grow abundantly and grow larger. animals grow larger and quicker. valuable ore, gems and minerals deposits are far more abundant and appear at random areas within 50 miles.
- primal elemental and fay energy is far more common with small rifts from the elemental and fay planes leaking out affecting pockets of areas within 50 miles.
- water and food is far more refreshing and tasteful within 50 miles.
If the Primal Wyvern dies, all effects fade over 1d4 days. if a True Ancient dragon were to kill a Primal Wyvern and takes its lair, all regional and lair effects stay as they are and replace the true dragons regional and lair effects.
