Actions

Bite. Melee Weapon Attack: +5 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 14 (2d10 + 3) piercing damage.

Force Breath (Recharge 4–6). The dragon exhales a 30-foot line of magical force that is 5 feet wide. Each creature in that line must make a DC 13 Dexterity saving throw, taking 27 (6d8) force damage on a failed save, or half as much damage on a successful one.

Description

The most powerful gem dragon race, amethyst dragons are honor bound, regal creatures. At birth, these dragons have lavender skin with fine, translucent-purple scales. These scales darken as the creature grows older, eventually reaching a sparkling lavender color. These creatures approach life with a detached air, ignoring the conflicts of good and evil, law and chaos. At best, they see these conflicts as petty squabbles over inconsequential points of view, and not worthy of their time or consideration. These majestic dragons consider themselves to be the leaders of the gem dragons, and most of the lesser gem dragons acquiesce to this leadership.

While amethyst dragons consider their silver and copper cousins to be foolish and have an active dislike of red and white dragons, they do not consider any life form to be their inherent enemies. They prefer to reason out a settlement through discussion and negotiation rather than through combat, but they can and will fight if they must. Being honorable and noble, these dragons never hide or attempt to ambush foes. To them, even retreating is a dishonorable action, but they will flee if faced with certain death. Amethyst dragons eat large quantities of fish and gems. They keep vassals to attend to their needs, though they do not place as many restrictions or requirements on them as other dragon lords do. Amethyst dragons approach mating in a very logical manner, seeking the optimum partner to produce the best offspring. Love and pleasure rarely, if ever, enter the equation.

Lair and Lair Actions

An Amethyst Dragon’s Lair

Amethyst dragons lair in high mountains, dwelling in civilizations built for their vassals to attend to their every wish. Most keep at least one hidden, underwater cave for seclusion and secrecy.

With its hoard well protected deep within its secret underwater cave, an amethyst dragon spends much of its time out ensuring that the other gem dragon races are following the rule of honor it imposes upon them. For an amethyst dragon, the great heights of the world are the throne from which it can look out to survey all it controls—which it believes to be everything in existence.

Throughout the lair complex, servants erect monuments to the dragon’s power, telling the grim story of its life, the enemies it has slain, and the nations it has conquered.

Lair Actions

On initiative count 20 (losing initiative ties), the dragon takes a lair action to cause one of the following effects; the dragon can’t use the same effect two rounds in a row:

  • Magical power floods through the lair, overwhelming every creature not in tune with the magic of the world. Each creature must make a DC 13 Dexterity saving throw, taking 21 (6d6) force damage on a failed save, or half as much damage on a successful one.
  • The lair quickly floods with water and empties back out. Each creature in the lair that cannot swim and breathe in water must make a DC 13 Constitution saving throw or be knocked prone and be stunned until the start of its next turn.
  • The Border Ethereal begins to leach into the Material Plane around the dragon. Any creature within 10 feet of the dragon must make a DC 15 Constitution saving throw or be unable to pierce the veil of the Border Ethereal. Until the start of the dragon's next turn, the dragon is considered invisible to any creature who failed the saving throw, and the dragon has resistance to all non-force damage those creatures deal to it.

Regional Effects

The region containing a legendary amethyst dragon’s lair is warped by the dragon’s magic, which creates one or more of the following effects:

  • The natural power of the world's magic is strengthened by the dragon's presence in the area. Any magical effect that deals force damage within 1 mile of the dragon's lair deals 1 additional force damage.
  • Any reflective surface within 1 mile of the lair shows the reflection of the Ethereal Plane rather than the Material.
  • Translucent purple flowers grow in abundance within 6 miles of the lair.

If the dragon dies, these effects fade over the course of 1d10 days.
