Traits

False Appearance. While the tree remains motionless, it is indistinguishable from a normal tree.

Regeneration. The Hearthorn tree regains 10 hit points at the start of its turn. If the tree takes fire damage, this trait doesn’t function at the start of the tree’s next turn. The tree dies only if it starts its turn with 0 hit points and doesn’t regenerate.

Thorned Grasp. Creatures grappled by the Hearthorn tree take 10 (2d6 + 3) piercing damage at the start of each of their turns.

Actions

Multiattack. The Hearthorn tree makes two Thorn Whip or Slam attacks.

Thorn Whip. Melee Weapon Attack: +9 to hit, reach 15 ft., one target. Hit: 18 (3d8 + 5) piercing damage, and the target is grappled (escape DC 16). Until this grapple ends, the target is restrained, and the Hearthorn tree can’t use its Thorn Whip on another target.

Blood Drain. Melee Weapon Attack: +9 to hit, reach 5 ft., one grappled creature. Hit: 22 (4d8 + 5) necrotic damage, and the Hearthorn tree regains hit points equal to the necrotic damage dealt.

Slam. Melee Weapon Attack: +6 to hit, reach 10 ft., one target. Hit: 14 (3d6 + 4) bludgeoning damage.

Hug. Melee Weapon Attack: +6 to hit, reach 10 ft., one target. Hit: 14 (3d6 + 4) piercing damage. Dexterity savings throw or be grappled.

Reactions

Thorny Retribution. When a creature within 10 feet of the Hearthorn tree hits it with an attack, the Hearthorn tree can use its reaction to make a Thorn Whip attack against that creature.

Description

An awakened tree is an ordinary tree given sentience and mobility by the awaken spell or similar magic.

The Hearthorn tree is a large and formidable plant with dark, twisted branches covered in sharp thorns. It feeds off the blood of animals and unwary adventurers, grappling them with its thorny vines. The tree is unaligned, acting purely on its natural instinct to sustain itself. Once awakened, it becomes even more dangerous, using its newfound sentience to actively seek out and ensnare its prey.
