Traits

Tunneler. The eel can burrow through solid rock at half its burrow speed and leaves a 10-foot-diameter tunnel in its wake.

Rooted. The eel cannot travel more than 250 feet from its primary root where its body is rooted. If its primary root is destroyed it cannot absorb water and dies over the course of three days.

Actions

Multiattack. The eel makes a bite attack or uses its inhale then uses its spit

Bite. Melee Weapon Attack: +13 to hit, reach 10 ft., one target. Hit: 22 (3d8 + 9) piercing damage. If the target is a Large or smaller creature, it must succeed on a DC 19 Dexterity saving throw or be swallowed by the eel. A swallowed creature is blinded and restrained, it has total cover against attacks and other effects outside the worm, and it takes 14 (4d6) acid damage and 14 (4d6) cold damage at the start of each of the eel's turns. If the eel takes 30 damage or more on a single turn from a creature inside it, the worm must succeed on a DC 21 Constitution saving throw at the end of that turn or regurgitate all swallowed creatures, which fall prone in a space within 10 feet of the worm. If the eel dies, a swallowed creature is no longer restrained by it and can escape from the corpse by using 20 feet of movement, exiting prone.

Inhale (Recharge 4-6). The eel inhales in a 5 foot radius cylinder continuing for 20 feet in a horizontal line. Each large or smaller creature in that range must succeed on a DC 22 dexterity saving throw or be sucked towards the eel and swallowed by it. The details for swallowing are noted in the bite action.

Spit. The eel spits out one creature which it has swallowed, flinging them up to 60 feet in a direction of the eel's choice. If a flung creature hits a solid surface it takes 24 (3d10+8) bludgeoning damage.

Legendary Actions

The eel can take 3 legendary actions, choosing from the options below. Only one legendary action option can be used at a time and only at the end of another creature’s turn. The eel regains spent legendary actions at the start of its turn.

Bite (Costs 1 Action). The eel makes a bite attack.

Spit (Costs 1 Action). The eel uses its spit.

Rapid Tunneling (Costs 2 Actions). The eel burrows up to 2 times its burrowing speed through any material including solid rock.

Description

Blood eels are massive eels, measuring 250 feet long uncoiled. These brutal hunters are apex predators who dominate their ecosystems.

Lair and Lair Actions

A blood eel's lair is the 50 foot radius around its primary root, to which it is rooted to. It is common for a blood Eel to dig this out itself, creating a fifty foot diameter dome around its root. This dome can be made of stone, coral, or any solid material. It hunts outside its lair, and eats within its lair.

A blood eel encountered in its lair has a challenge rating of 14 (11,500 XP).

Lair Actions

On initiative count 20 (losing initiative ties), the eel takes a lair action to cause one of the following effects:

  • All the water in the lair slowly is absorbed into the eel's root over the course of 5 rounds, causing the eel to heal 2d6 hit points each round for 5 rounds.
  • Water leaks from outside, filling up the lair over 5 rounds.
