Regeneration. Bartholomew regains 10 hit points at the start of its turn. If he takes fire or radiant damage, this trait doesn’t function at the start of his next turn. Bartholomew's body is destroyed only if it starts its turn with 0 hit points and doesn’t regenerate.
Rejuvenation. When Bartholomew's body is destroyed, his soul lingers. After 24 hours, the soul inhabits and animates another humanoid corpse on the same plane of existence and regains all its hit points. While the soul is bodiless, a wish spell can be used to force the soul to go to the afterlife and not return.
Sea Legs. Bartholomew has advantage on ability checks and saving throws to resist being knocked prone.
Turn Immunity. Bartholomew is immune to effects that turn undead.
Vengeful Tracker. Bartholomew knows the distance to and direction of any creature against which he seeks revenge, even if the creature and Bartholomew are on different planes of existence. If the creature being tracked by Bartholomew dies, he knows.
Multiattack. Bartholomew makes three attacks: one with his hand crossbow or fist and two with his Blackfrost Scimitar.
Hand Crossbow. Ranged Weapon Attack: +8 to hit, range 30/120 ft., one target. Hit: 7 (1d6 + 4) piercing damage.
Blackfrost Scimitar. Melee Weapon Attack: +9 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 9 (1d8 + 5) slashing damage and 4 (1d6 + 1) cold damage, or 10 (1d10 + 5) slashing damage and 4 (1d6 + 1) cold damage if used with two hands.
Fist. Melee Weapon Attack: +8 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 11 (2d6 + 4) bludgeoning damage. If the target is a creature against which the revenant has sworn vengeance, the target takes an extra 14 (4d6) bludgeoning damage. Instead of dealing damage, Bartholomew can grapple the target (escape DC 14) provided the target is Large or smaller.
Vengeful Glare. Bartholomew targets one creature he can see within 30 feet of him and against which he has sworn vengeance. The target must make a DC 15 Wisdom saving throw. On a failure, the target is paralyzed until Bartholomew deals damage to it, or until the end of Bartholomew's next turn. When the paralysis ends, the target is frightened of Bartholomew for 1 minute. The frightened target can repeat the saving throw at the end of each of its turns, with disadvantage if it can see Bartholomew, ending the frightened condition on itself on a success.
Shape Up, Ye Dog (2/day). Whenever a friendly creature within 30 feet of Bartholomew that can hear him misses with an attack, Bartholomew can yell perilous threats to allow that creature to reroll the attack roll.
Description
Bartholomew Blackdagger is a tall, imposing figure with a lean yet muscular build, his wild, white hair is adorned with beads and trinkets, and his white beard is bushy and long. His piercing gray eyes, set in a weathered, scarred face, reveal a dangerous intelligence honed from years at sea. Clad in a long, dark coat and a tricorn hat, he wields a black steel scimitar with a bejeweled basket hilt, known as Blackfrost. Cursed to undeath by the black dragon Garrundar the Vile, Bartholomew is a revenant, commanding a ghost ship called Terror of the Tides, crewed by undead skeletons and wights.
Unlike the rest of his crew, Blackdagger has accumulated a few valuable trinkets. He wears a silver chain with a black dragon pendant around his neck (150 gp) Which acts as a sending stone, (the other is held by Garrundar the Vile) a gold ring with a carnelian skull (60 gp) and a black leather belt with a golden buckle (25 gp). Blackdagger also wields a black steel scimitar with a bejeweled basket hilt (Frost Brand Scimitar) (5,000gp) that he calls Blackfrost.
The Scimitar is identical to a +1 Frost Brand Scimitar except that upon the destruction of Bartholomew's body it becomes possessed by his vengeful spirit and additionally gains the properties of a Scimitar of Vengeance.
