Traits

Shapechanger. The bean mimic can use its action to polymorph into a still of beans or back into its true, amorphous form (just a mound of beans). Its statistics are the same in each form. Any equipment it is wearing or carrying isn't transformed. It reverts to its true form if it dies.

Adhesive (Object Form Only). The bean mimic adheres to anything that touches it. A Huge or smaller creature adhered to the mimic is also grappled by it (escape DC 13). Ability checks made to escape this grapple have disadvantage.

False Appearance (Object Form Only). While the bean mimic remains motionless inside a form of container, it is indistinguishable from an ordinary pile of beans.

Grappler. The bean mimic has advantage on attack rolls against any creature grappled by it.

Actions

Pseudopod. Melee Weapon Attack: +5 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 7 (1d8 + 3) bludgeoning damage. If the bean mimic is in its disguised form, the target is subjected to its Adhesive trait.

Bite. Melee Weapon Attack: +5 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 7 (1d8 + 3) piercing damage plus 4 (1d8) acid damage.

Engulf. The bean mimic moves up to its speed. While doing so, it can enter Large or smaller creatures' spaces. Whenever the bean mimic enters a creature's space, the creature must make a DC 12 Dexterity saving throw.

On a successful save, the creature can choose to be pushed 5 feet back or to the side of the bean mimic. A creature that chooses not to be pushed suffers the consequences of a failed saving throw.

On a failed save, the bean mimic enters the creature's space, and the creature takes 10 (3d6) bludgeoning damage and is engulfed. The engulfed creature can't breathe, is restrained and takes 21 (6d6) bludgeoning damage at the start of each of the bean mimic's turns. When the bean mimic moves, the engulfed creature moves with it.

An engulfed creature can try to escape by taking an action to make a DC 12 Strength check. On a success, the creature escapes and enters a space of its choice within 5 feet of the bean mimic.

Description

A bean mimic is a mischievous and friendly creature who hides most commonly in empty chests and other containers. It most commonly first appears to be a simple chest that is filled to the brim with beans. Once opened, the chest will spill the beans (pun intended) onto the creature who opened it. The creature will feel pleasure with the riches it has acquired, but then the bean pile will shift. The mimic will reveal its true form, opening its eyes and large, toothy mouth.

The mimic will automatically become attached to its opener (both emotionally and physically) and follow them around the dungeon/map. It can be commanded by its opener to attack or perform certain tasks, becoming a sort of familiar. The bean mimic can also be used as a food source, counting as 1,500 pounds of rations. The mimic will have little to no reaction to being consumed, but will gradually become smaller (loosing 1d8 total hp and 1d4 AC every 10 pounds consumed) When the last part of the bean mimic is consumed, the mimic will die.
