Alchemical Type. The alchemy beetle's damage resistance and its damage type depend on the fluid it contains.

Alchemical Fluid. The alchemy beetle can be filled with up to 100 units of fluid. The fluid can be acidic (Acid), endothermic (Cold), exothermic (Fire) or galvanic (Lightning). An alchemy beetle is found with 6d12 units of fluid remaining.
100 units of any of these fluids can be created by using the body parts of a creature that deals that damage type, as well as 100gp of additional ingredients and 8 hours of time.

Alchemical Blast. When an alchemy beetle is reduced to 0 hit points, it explodes in a 10ft. radius. Any creature in the area must succeed on a DC11 Dexterity saving throw or take 1d4 points of damage for every 10 units of alchemical fluid remaining in the beetle. On a successful save, the creature takes half damage.

Unusual Nature. The alchemy beetle doesn’t require air, food, drink, or sleep.

Actions

Multiattack. The alchemy beetle makes two Alchemical Bite attacks.

Alchemical Bite. Melee Weapon Attack: +3 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 6 (2d4 + 1) damage of a type determined by its Alchemical Type feature. On a hit or miss, the alchemy beetle loses 1 unit of fluid.

Description

What at first glance appears to be an enormous insect is actually some sort of construct. A black iron exoskeleton holds a glass hemisphere churning with liquid. Smoke rises from where the construct's mandibles drip this liquid to the ground.

12

This creature is an alchemy beetle, a mindless construct incapable of independent thought.

17

Alchemy beetles were constructed by an ancient civilization to act as guardians but now wander the continent unguided. They are so named because each has an alchemical bite fuelled by liquid stored in a glass bubble on its back.

22

Any combat against an alchemy beetle is a losing proposition. If destroyed, the beetle explodes, dealing damage to all nearby creatures.

 Creation

A black iron framework and thick glass carapace make up an alchemy beetle's body. The carapace can be created using 500gp of raw materials, along with a successful DC15 Intelligence (Blacksmithing Tools) check and a successful DC15 Dexterity (Glassblower's Tools) check. The alchemy beetle's creator can give the construct a simple command to govern its actions, such as "Remain in an area and attack all creatures that enter." The creator can give the construct a new command at any time the construct is within 30ft.
