Traits

Legendary Resistance (3/Day). If the dragon fails a saving throw, it can choose to succeed instead.

Second Wind. The dragon has a limited well of stamina that it can draw on to protect itself from harm. On its turn, the dragon can use a bonus action to regain 21 (2d10 + 10) hit points. Once the dragon uses this feature, it must finish a short or long rest before it can use this ability again.

Action Surge. The dragon can push itself beyond its normal limits for a moment. On the dragon's turn, it can take one additional action.

Actions

Multiattack. The dragon can use its Frightful presence. It then makes three attacks: one with its bite and two with its claws.

Bite. Melee Weapon Attack: +17 to hit, reach 15 ft., one target. Hit: 21 (2d10 + 10) piercing damage.

Claw. Melee Weapon Attack: +17 to hit, reach 10 ft., one target. Hit: 17 (2d6 + 10) slashing damage.

Tail Blade. Melee Weapon Attack: +17 to hit, reach 20 ft., one target. Hit: 25 (2d12 + 12) slashing damage.

Frightful Presence. Each creature of the dragon's choice that is within 120 feet of the dragon and aware of it must succeed on a DC 21 Wisdom saving throw or become frightened for 1 minute. A creature can repeat the saving throw at the end of each of its turns, ending the effect on itself on a success. If a creature's saving throw is successful or the effect ends for it, the creature is immune to the dragon's Frightful Presence for the next 24 hours.

War Cry (1/Day). The dragon rears back and releases a thunderous roar that echoes across the battlefield. This primal cry inspires its followers and intimidates its enemies. All allies within a 360-foot radius gain 8 (1d6 + 5) temporary hit points and advantage on attack rolls for the next round, while all enemies within the same radius must succeed on a DC 18 Wisdom saving throw or be frightened until the end of their next turn. All enemies must also make DC 17 Constitution saving throw, taking 58 (8d12 +10) force damage.

Reactions

Parry. The dragon adds 3 to its AC against one melee attack that would hit it. To do so, the dragon must be able to see the attacker.

Legendary Actions

The dragon can take 3 legendary actions, choosing from the options below. Only one legendary action option can be used at a time and only at the end of another creature's turn. The dragon regains spent legendary actions at the start of its turn.

Detect. The dragon makes a Wisdom (perception) check.

Tail Attack. The dragon makes a tail attack.

Wing Attack (Costs 2 Actions). The dragon beats its wings. Each creature within 15 ft. of the dragon must succeed on a DC 25 Dexterity saving throw or take 17 (2d6 + 10) bludgeoning damage and be knocked prone. The dragon can then fly up to half its flying speed.

Description

Vanguard Dragons, like all Warden Dragons, hoard people, but their hoards are comprised of warriors, soldiers, and martial experts. These dragons seek out individuals with a strong sense of duty and combat prowess, and their hoards are known for their disciplined and hierarchical structure. Vanguard Dragons are driven by a desire to build and lead powerful armies. They are natural strategists and tacticians, viewing every hoard member as a vital piece in their grand military scheme. These dragons value loyalty, discipline, and martial skill above all else. They are often found on battlefields, offering their protection and strength to those who pledge their allegiance. A Vanguard Dragon's hoard is organized into units and battalions, with each member given a specific role based on their abilities and skills. The dragon itself acts as the supreme commander, issuing orders and leading their forces with unmatched precision. Training is rigorous, and the bond between the dragon and its hoard is forged through shared battles and victories. Vanguard Dragons inspire their hoards through sheer presence and charisma. They are known to lead from the front, demonstrating their combat prowess and tactical brilliance in every engagement. The dragon's ability to boost the morale and fighting spirit of their hoard is legendary.

The members of a Vanguard Dragon's hoard are often referred to as "The Wrymguard." The most devoted and skilled warriors are given the title of "Captain" and are responsible for leading smaller units within the hoard. The dragon's chosen successor, the "Champion," is the one who has proven their worth through countless battles and has shown the greatest loyalty and tactical acumen. The Champion is groomed to one day receive the dragon’s essence and take up the mantle of Vanguard Dragon. Vanguard Dragons have a fearsome and regal appearance, often adorned with natural armour that resembles a combination of dragon scales and knightly plate. Their wings are powerful and broad, designed to carry them swiftly into battle. These dragons often bear battle scars, each one a testament to their many victories. Their eyes burn with a strategic brilliance, and their roar can rally troops from miles away.

While some Vanguard Dragons are noble and seek to protect their hoards and lands from threats, others can be tyrannical, using their hoards to conquer and dominate. The intent of a Vanguard Dragon can vary widely, but their commitment to martial excellence and the strength of their hoard remains constant. Whether they are defenders of the realm or conquerors of kingdoms, Vanguard Dragons are always at the centre of the action, leading their legions to glory.
