Traits:
-
Water Form: The Water Jackal can move through a space as narrow as 1 inch wide without squeezing. While in water form, it leaves no trace of its presence other than the shifting of water or a faint, cold mist.
-
Pack Tactics: The Water Jackal has advantage on an attack roll against a creature if at least one of the jackal’s allies is within 5 feet of the creature and the ally isn’t incapacitated.
Bite and Latch: Melee Weapon Attack: +5 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 7 (1d8 + 3) piercing damage plus 3 (1d6) cold damage. If the target is a creature, the Jackal attempts to latch on to the creature if it is a medium or smaller creature. [grappled] (escape DC 13).
Drowning Leap: If the Water Jackal hits with a successful bite and latch attack, it can use a bonus action to attempt to enter the mouth or nostrils of a Medium or smaller creature it is grappling. The creature must make a DC 13 Constitution saving throw. On a failed save, the Water Jackal enters the creature’s throat and begins to suffocate it. The creature takes 2d6 cold damage at the start of each of its turns and is unable to speak or cast spells with verbal components. The creature can repeat the saving throw at the end of each of its turns, expelling the Water Jackal and ending the suffocation effect on a success. The Water Jackal is expelled into an adjacent space and automatically reverts to its water form.
Reaction: Fluid Evasion
Effect: When the Water Jackal takes damage, it can use its reaction to instantly shift into its water form, causing the attack to pass through it harmlessly. The Water Jackal reduces the damage taken by half and can immediately move up to 10 feet without provoking opportunity attacks.
Description
Water Jackals are swift, elemental hunters resembling sleek jackals made of swirling, animate water. Their liquid bodies allow them to flow through tiny gaps and strike unexpectedly from any direction. When cornered, they use their Drowning Leap to force themselves into the throats of their enemies, attempting to drown and freeze their prey from the inside.
These creatures are relentless in their pursuit of their summoner’s enemies, and they can be especially dangerous when hunting in packs, using their fluid forms and tactics to overwhelm and suffocate their target.
