Traits

Keen Sight. The anzu has advantage on Wisdom (Perception) checks that rely on sight.

Storm Camouflage. The anzu has advantage on Dexterity (Stealth) checks made to hide during storms.

Actions

Multiattack. The anzu makes three attacks: one with its bite, and two with its talons.

Bite. Melee Weapon Attack: +6 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 12 (2d8 + 3) piercing damage plus 7 (2d6) lightning damage.

Talon. Melee Weapon Attack: +6 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 8 (2d4 + 3) slashing damage.

Booming Roar (Recharge 6). The anzu releases a mighty, thunderous roar. Every creature within 30 feet that can hear the anzu must make a DC 14 Constitution saving throw, taking 27 (5d10) thunder damage and becoming deafened until the end of the anzu's next turn on a failed save. On a successful save, a creature takes half the damage, and isn't deafened.

Description

The dreaded anzu is an airborne terror that strikes during storms. Appearing as an unnatural amalgamation of a lion's head and an eagle's body, the anzu uses the cover of rain and thunder to prey on any creature that finds themselves within it's sight.

Born of Spite. The anzu are said to have been originally created by the djinn; using the ravenous creatures as agents of vengeance against those who have enslaved them. Malicious and unrelenting, the anzu act as painful reminders of the dangers that lie in imprisoning genies.

Storm Chasers. Anzu nest in jagged, remote areas, far away from civilized areas. They lie in wait for storms to brew, then take to the sky and hide amongst the blackened clouds. Watching and waiting for prey, the anzu strike like lightning from the sky, carrying any creature they can back into the air to be torn apart and devoured.

Aerial Watchdogs. Despite their selfish and violent temperaments, anzu are often kept as pets by more powerful creatures. Djinn, cloud giants, and powerful mages have been known to keep anzu bound to their floating fortresses, using them as fearsome sky guards. Orcs, bugbears, and other brazen humanoids have also been known to try and capture anzu for use as mounts (with limited success).
