They are adventuring gear. You buy a camel as a player to carry you and your stuff around.
Camel's are actually decently intelligent, even more so than a horse. Them sharing a score seems strange, I would definitely bump it up to at least a 3.

2014 camel had a Strength score of 16 but was the only creature in the entire 2014 MM who didn't add their Strength score to a melee attack. So, they fixed that but why did they make them weaker? Have they been sitting on a couch for the last 10 years?
Are there any rules regarding heat, sand or deserts? If so, I think it would be neat if the camel had some sort of immunity or resistance to those effects, though that might be more worth mentioning in like the DMG, maybe it's related to the habitat, though it might work better as a house rule.

Llamas are famous spitters but Camels are related to llamas as they are the same family
