Traits

Nightmare: Whenever a creature starts it's turn within 40ft. of the dragon they must make a Intelligence saving throw 17 or take (3d6) psychic damage and become frightened of the dragon until the start of their next turn. The dragon heals for the amount of damage taken.

Fear: Creatures that can't be frightened can be frightened by this dragon.

Nightmare Spawn: If a creature dies because of psychic damage taken from this dragon a nightmare dragon wyrmling spawns from it's body if it is still dead in 1d4 days.

Nightmare Cloud: Whenever a this dragon teleports it leaves a black smoky cloud in it's place that evaporates after one minute. If a creature ends it's turn in the cloud they must make a Intelligence saving throw 17 or take(4d6) psychic damage.

 Nightmarish Presence: All creatures have disadvantage on intelligence saving throws if they can see this dragon. If a creature drops to zero hit points while frightened of the dragon they have disadvantage on the death saves. 

 

Actions

Multi-Attack: The dragon make two claw attacks and one bite attack.

Bite: Melee Weapon Attack:  +10 to hit, reach 5 ft., 1 target. Hit: 14  (2d8 + 6) necrotic damage.  

Claw: Melee Weapon Attack:+10 to hit, reach 5 ft., 1 target. Hit: 8 (1d8  + 4) necrotic damage.

Jump-scare: The dragon can only use this as a surprise attack. The dragon makes a bite attack. If it hits, the target must make a Intelligence saving throw 17 or take (4d6) psychic damage and become frightened of the dragon for one minute. It can repeat the saving throw at the start of it's turn. The target takes damage again each time it fails the saving throw.

  Nightmare Breath (Recharge 5–6) The dragon breaths a thick black smoke that makes the dragon appear to be your greatest nightmare come to life in a 60ft. line that is 10ft. thick. Any creature in that line must make a Intelligence saving throw 18 or take 42 (14d6) psychic damage and become frightened of the nightmare dragon for one minute. On a success they take half damage and aren't frightened. On a creature frightened this way's turn they must make a Intelligence saving throw 17 or be forced to spend all of their movement and take the dash action in the fastest way away from the dragon. On a success they become unfrightened.

Bonus Actions

Nightmarish Speed: The dragon can spend a bonus action to teleport within 5ft. of any creature that is frightened of it.

Nightmare Feast: The dragon can spend a bonus action to force all creatures that are frightened of it to make a Intelligence saving throw 17 or take (4d4) psychic damage. The dragon regains hit points for the amount of damage dealt.

Legendary Actions

The dragon has three legendary actions which it can take at the end of any other creatures turn. The dragon regains it's legendary actions at the start of it's turn.

Darkness(Cost one Action): The dragon takes the hide action.

Jump-scare(Cost one Action): The dragon makes a jump-scare action if it is hidden.

Psychic Take Over(Cost Two Actions): The dragon forces a creature frightened of it to make a wisdom saving throw 15 with disadvantage. If they fail they are charmed by the dragon until they are unfrightened of it. When they are unfrightened they must make a Intelligence saving throw 15 or gain a long term madness. 

 

Description

The first nightmare dragons were formed from a powerful dragons nightmares. They then spread to the darkest corners of the earth to feast on peoples fears in darkness. People who survive an attack from a nightmare dragon have said that it was the scariest thing that had ever happened to them.

Nightmare dragons appear to be a black smoke in the form of a dragon with red glowing eyes. 

Most nightmare dragons are found in places of shadow and death.
