Traits

Legendary Resistance (3/Day). If Ancalagon fails a saving throw, he can choose to succeed instead.

Magic Resistance. Ancalagon has advantage on saving throws against spells and other magical effects.

Magic Weapons. Ancalagon’s weapon attacks are magical.

Inferno Aura. At the start of each of Ancalagon’s turns, each creature within 60 feet of him must make a DC 27 Constitution saving throw, taking 35 (10d6) fire damage on a failed save, or half as much damage on a successful one.

Actions

Multiattack. Ancalagon makes three attacks: one with his bite and two with his claws.

Bite. Melee Weapon Attack: +20 to hit, reach 20 ft., one target.
Hit: 49 (6d12 + 12) piercing damage plus 22 (4d10) fire damage.

Claw. Melee Weapon Attack: +20 to hit, reach 15 ft., one target.
Hit: 33 (4d8 + 12) slashing damage.

Tail. Melee Weapon Attack: +20 to hit, reach 25 ft., one target.
Hit: 40 (6d8 + 12) bludgeoning damage.

Breath of Annihilation (Recharge 5–6) Ancalagon exhales a storm of destructive fire in a 300-foot cone. Each creature in that area must make a DC 27 Dexterity saving throw, taking 182 (28d12) fire damage on a failed save, or half as much on a successful one. This attack ignores resistance to fire damage.

Bonus Actions

Winged Fury Ancalagon beats his massive wings furiously, sending out a wave of force. Each creature within 60 feet of him must make a DC 27 Strength saving throw. On a failed save, creatures take 44 (8d10) force damage and are pushed back 30 feet. On a success, they take half damage and are not pushed.

Baleful Flame Ancalagon can choose one creature he can see within 120 feet. That creature is engulfed in black flames until the end of Ancalagon's next turn. While engulfed, the creature takes 44 (8d10) fire damage at the start of its turn, and its speed is reduced by half. The flames persist until the creature succeeds on a DC 27 Constitution saving throw at the end of its turn or until the effect ends.

Shadow Slip Using his connection to the darkest powers of Morgoth, Ancalagon can momentarily shift through the shadows. He can teleport up to 120 feet to an unoccupied space he can see. Upon arriving, he leaves behind a cloud of choking smoke that heavily obscures the 20-foot radius area he teleports from until the start of his next turn.

Reactions

Meteoric Fall
When Ancalagon is reduced to half his hit points or less by an attack, he can use his reaction to crash into the ground with immense force. All creatures within a 200-foot radius must make a DC 27 Strength or Dexterity saving throw (their choice). On a failed save, they take 70 (20d6) bludgeoning damage and are knocked prone. On a successful save, they take half as much damage and are not knocked prone. Ancalagon then rises to the air as part of this reaction, avoiding opportunity attacks.

Fiery Retribution
When Ancalagon is hit by a melee attack from within 10 feet, he can unleash a burst of flame in retaliation. The attacker must make a DC 27 Dexterity saving throw, taking 35 (10d6) fire damage on a failed save, or half as much on a successful one. This reaction ignores fire resistance.

Devastating Roar
If Ancalagon takes damage that reduces him to one-quarter of his hit points, he can roar in rage as a reaction. All creatures within 300 feet of him must succeed on a DC 27 Wisdom saving throw or become frightened for 1 minute. A frightened creature can repeat the saving throw at the end of each of its turns, ending the effect on itself on a success. Additionally, the roar causes tremors in a 100-foot radius, forcing all creatures on the ground to make a DC 25 Dexterity saving throw or fall prone.

Legendary Actions

Ancalagon can take 3 legendary actions, choosing from the options below. Only one legendary action option can be used at a time and only at the end of another creature’s turn. Ancalagon regains spent legendary actions at the start of his turn.

  • Tail Attack: Ancalagon makes a tail attack.

  • Wing Attack (Costs 2 Actions): Ancalagon beats his wings. Each creature within 30 feet of him must succeed on a DC 27 Dexterity saving throw or take 30 (4d6 + 12) bludgeoning damage and be knocked prone. Ancalagon can then fly up to half his flying speed.

  • Incinerating Breath (Costs 3 Actions): Ancalagon exhales a 60-foot cone of searing flame. Each creature in the area must make a DC 27 Dexterity saving throw, taking 65 (10d12) fire damage on a failed save, or half as much damage on a successful one.

Mythic Actions

Mythic Actions (Upon Ancalagon's first defeat, he regains full hit points and accesses these actions)

  • Cataclysmic Crash: Ancalagon smashes into the ground, causing a shockwave in a 200-foot radius. All creatures in this area must make a DC 27 Strength saving throw or be knocked prone and take 88 (16d10) bludgeoning damage.

  • Hurricane of Flame: Ancalagon summons a whirlwind of fire. All creatures within a 100-foot radius must make a DC 27 Dexterity saving throw, taking 77 (14d10) fire damage and becoming engulfed in flames 10d10 fire damage at the start of their turns) until they use an action to extinguish the flames.

Description

Ancalagon the Black, was the greatest of Morgoth's Dragons, and the mightiest winged fire-dragon that ever existed. Bred by Morgoth in the depths of his fortress of Angband, Ancalagon is present at the last battle of the First Age, which sees the battle between the armies of the Valar and Morgoth to free Middle-earth from the latter's yoke. Morgoth, seeing his armies in disarray, unveils, as a last resort, the winged dragons led by Ancalagon the Black. Eärendil and Thorondor are confronted by Ancalagon in an aerial battle in which the dragon is shot down, bringing down the peaks of Thangorodrim and defeating its master. At the end of the First Age, in the year 587, a few years after the fall of Gondolin and the destruction of the kingdom of Doriath, Eärendil and Elwing set sail for Valinor to convince the Valar to save Middle-earth from the yoke of Morgoth. Thanks to their intervention, the armies of the Valar led by Eönwë, the herald of Manwë, Finarfin king of the Ñoldor of Aman, Ingwë king of the Vanyar, and Eärendil flying in Vingilot, march towards Thangorodrim, beneath which lies Morgoth's fortress, where they are joined by the armies of the Edain. Morgoth brings most of his armies out of Angband, but they are quickly routed by the Valar forces. Sensing that victory was slipping from his grasp, he called in his reserve forces, the first winged dragons, led by Ancalagon the Black. So terrible was the force of the attack that "the armies of the Valar retreated before the thunder, lightning and hurricane of flames that preceded the dragons". However, Eärendil on his ship Vingilot, accompanied by Thorondor leading an armada of birds, battled Ancalagon and the other dragons for "a whole day and night of doubt", before piercing the dragon. Ancalagon, shot out of the sky, falls on the peaks of Thangorodrim, causing their destruction and ending the War of the Great Wrath. Angband is opened and Morgoth imprisoned by the Valar, sounding the end of the First Age of Middle-earth.

Ancalagon’s fall brings ruin to landscapes, shattering mountains and ending wars. His presence alone turns battlefields into blazing hellscapes, his shadow eclipsing entire armies.

Lair and Lair Actions

Lair Actions

On initiative count 20 (losing initiative ties), Ancalagon can take a lair action to cause one of the following effects:

  • Volcanic Eruption: Fissures erupt with lava in three places Ancalagon can see within 120 feet. Each creature in a 20-foot radius must make a DC 25 Dexterity saving throw or take 50 (10d10) fire damage.
  • Infernal Darkness: Thick clouds of smoke cover a 60-foot radius around a point Ancalagon chooses. This area becomes heavily obscured, and all creatures inside are blinded for 1 minute unless they succeed on a DC 25 Constitution saving throw at the start of their turn.
