Eyes of Bystophus. Arthak starts his day with 20 Eyes of Bystophus which he can spend chosing from the options below.
- Cast Wrathful Smite (1 Eye of Bystophus)
- Summon undead (2 Eyes of Bystophus for each undead)
- Cast Blink (5 Eyes of Bystophus)
Unholy Smite. When Arthak hits with a melee weapon attack, it can expend a spell slot to deal additional necrotic damage to the target, in addition to the weapon’s damage. The extra damage is 9 (2d8) for a 1st-level spell slot, plus 4 (1d8) for each spell level higher than 1st, to a maximum of 21 (5d8). The damage increases by 4 (1d8) if the target is a celestial.
Unholy Resilience. Arthak is immune to disease, and cannot be charmed or frightened. It has a +4 bonus to any saving throw it makes. These benefits cease to function if the fallen paladin is unconscious or slain.
Spellcasting. Arthak is a 9th-level spellcaster. Its spellcasting ability is Charisma (spell save DC 16, +8 to hit with spell attacks). It has the following paladin spells prepared.
1st level (4 slots): Command, Hellish Rebuke, Inflict wounds, Shield of Faith
2nd level (3 slots): Branding Smite, Crown of Madness, Darkness
3rd level (2 slots): Animate Dead, Bestow Curse, Spirit Shroud
Duergar Magic. Arthak can cast the Enlarge/Reduce spell with this trait, without requiring a material component. He can also cast the Invisibility spell with it, without requiring a material component. Once he has cast either of these spells with this trait, he can’t cast that spell with it again until he finishes a long rest.
Legendary Resistance (3/Day). If Arthak fails a saving throw, he can choose to succeed instead.
Multiattack. Arthak makes two warhammer attacks.
Warhammer. Melee Weapon Attack: +9 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 8 (1d10 + 9) bludgeoning damage, plus 4 (1d8) necrotic damage.
Lay of Hands. Arthak has a pool of 45 hit points to use with its Lay on Hands ability. It regains spent hit points from this pool when it takes a long rest. It can use this ability to cause a creature within 5 feet of it or itself to regain any number of hit points, up to its hit point maximum or Arthak's pool of hit points is reduced to 0.
Unholy Feast (Recharge 5-6). Arthak can consume one of his undead minnions to regain 42 hit points.
Blessing of Bystophus. Arthak can use one of the effects of his Eyes of Bystophus skill.
Command the Horde. Arthak can command all of his undead minnions to perform a task or attack one target.
Arthak can take 4 legendary actions, choosing from the options below. Only one legendary action option can be used at a time and only at the end of another creature's turn. Arthak regains spent legendary actions at the start of her turn.
Forceful Tremor (Costs 1 action).
Arthak slams his warhammer on the ground. Those within 60 feet must make a DC 17 DEX save or be knocked prone.
Halt Vitality (Costs 2 actions).
Arthak unleashes a wave of negative energy. Ignoring cover, those within 60 feet of Arthak cannot regain hit points until the end of the creature's next turn.
Vital Obstruction (Costs 3 actions).
Each non‑undead within 20 feet of the creature must make a DC 18 CON save, taking 6d6 necrotic damage on a fail or half as much on a success. Arthak is healed for half damage dealt by this skill.
