Traits

Shapechanger. The Kumpfernickle can use its action to polymorph into a tiny copper coin, or back into its true form.

While in coin form, its walking speed is 5 feet, and while motionless it is indistinguishable from a normal copper coin. Its statistics, other than its size and speed, are unchanged. Anything it is wearing transforms with it, but nothing it is carrying does. It reverts to its true form if it dies.

Actions

Multiattack. The Kumpfernickle makes 2 wire grasp attacks

Wire grasp. Melee Weapon Attack: +7 to hit, reach 10 ft., one creature. Hit: 13 (2d8 + 4) slashing damage, and the target is grappled (escape DC 15). Until this grapple ends, the creature is restrained, and the Kumpfernickle can't grapple another creature.

False treasure. The Kumpfernickle chooses an object or itself in coin form to magically transforms into the appearance of a precious metal like gold, silver or platinum.  Each creature of the Kumpfernickles choice that sees the treasure must succeed on a DC 15  Wisdom saving throw or be charmed by the kumpfernickle for 1 minute, or until Kumpfernickle does anything harmful to it. While charmed in this way, a creature can do nothing but use its movement to approach the treasure in a safe manner and attempt to take it.

Spellcasting. The Kumpfernickle casts one of the following spells, requiring no spell components and using charisma as the spellcasting ability (spell save DC 15):

At will: Creation (as an action), Distort value, Incite greed, Enlarge/Reduce (self only)

1/day each: Animate objects (tiny objects only), Mislead

Bonus Actions

Shock. Melee Spell Attack: +9 to hit (with advantage if the target is wearing armor made of metal) reach 10ft., all creatures grappling the Kumpfernickle, holding the Kumpfernickle in coin form,  grappled by the Kumpfernickle. Hit:  18 (4d8) lightning damage, and the target can’t take reactions until the start of its next turn.

Reactions

Scatter (1/day).  In response to taking damage the Kumpfernickle explodes into a rain of copper coins. The damage is negated and Kumpfernickle transforms into coin form and 1d10 gold worth of copper coins in a 5ft radius around itself. The Kumpfernickle can choose to hide as a coin any where in the effected area.  Collecting all of the coins takes a creature 1 minute and also collects the Kumpfernickle if it hasn't escaped or been discovered.

Description

Kumpfernickles consume the luster from precious metals such as gold, silver and platinum  leaving behind less valuable metals like iron, nickle and copper.

They often hide as an ordinary copper coins to make their way into wealthy peoples coin pouch's before consuming all of the coins inside turning them into copper coins.  This is often interpreted as a curse for greed resulting in the Kumpfernickle being donated to a church as penance.  Most Kumpfernickles know better than to attempt to steal money from a god so usually simply flee church coffers leaving a copper coin behind in their stead.

Kumpfernickels have little interest in non precious metals and will happily trade  or throw away their large collections of copper or nickle for more previous metals like gold. When threatened they will scatter a large number of copper coins they've collected to hiding among them in the hopes of sneaking away.

Kumpfernickels have the ability to create the illusion of value in mundane objects and enjoy making greedy creatures collect objects  made of the metals they leave behind viewing it as waste.
