Shapechanger. The Vampire Butterfly can transform between its butterfly form and a humanoid-like creature, typically resembling a vampiric humanoid with moth-like wings. This transformation takes 1 bonus action.
Vampiric Flight. While flying, the Vampire Butterfly has advantage on Dexterity (Stealth) checks and can move through spaces occupied by creatures of its size or smaller without provoking opportunity attacks.
Regeneration. The Vampire Butterfly regains 5 hit points at the start of its turn if it has at least 1 hit point.
Bloodsucker. When the Vampire Butterfly hits a creature with its bite attack, it regains hit points equal to the necrotic damage dealt.
Sunlight Sensitivity. The Vampire Butterfly has disadvantage on attack rolls and on Wisdom (Perception) checks that rely on sight when the creature, or the target of its attack, is in direct sunlight.
Multiattack. The Vampire Butterfly makes two attacks: one with its bite and one with its tail stinger.
Bite. Melee Weapon Attack: +6 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 8 (1d6 + 4) piercing damage plus 7 (2d6) necrotic damage. The Vampire Butterfly regains hit points equal to the necrotic damage dealt.
Tail Stinger. Melee Weapon Attack: +6 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 6 (1d6 + 4) piercing damage and the target must succeed on a DC 14 Constitution saving throw or be paralyzed until the end of the Vampire Butterfly's next turn.
Charm (Recharge 5-6). The Vampire Butterfly targets one humanoid it can see within 30 feet of it. The target must succeed on a DC 14 Wisdom saving throw or be charmed by the Vampire Butterfly for 1 hour. While charmed in this way, the target regards the Vampire Butterfly as a trusted friend to be followed and protected. The charm ends early if the target is harmed by the Vampire Butterfly or any of its allies. A target can only be charmed by a Vampire Butterfly once per day.
Unnerving Flap. When a creature within 10 feet of the Vampire Butterfly hits it with an attack, the Butterfly can flap its wings in a dazzling display. The attacker must succeed on a DC 14 Wisdom saving throw or become frightened of the Vampire Butterfly until the end of its next turn.
Description
Vampire Butterflies are winged creatures of the night, mutated through the arcane or cursed by vampiric forces. Their delicate, iridescent wings hide the darkness that lies within them—once a beautiful insect, now an undead predator. Their bite sucks life force from victims, and they possess strange, almost hypnotic beauty that draws prey closer, often in the dead of night. These creatures are a mix of the natural and the unnatural, embodying the allure of a butterfly and the thirst of a vampire.
Lair and Lair Actions
The air in the lair is thick with a strange, intoxicating scent—like decaying flowers mixed with the sweetness of fresh blood. Soft, eerie whispers seem to drift on the breeze, the sound of moth-like wings brushing against the air. The temperature fluctuates between chilling cold and the warmth of a sickly, unnatural heat, adding to the unsettling atmosphere.
Gossamer webs, glistening with dew that appears more like dark red blood, stretch across trees, ruins, and skeletal remains of animals or even humanoids. These webs glow faintly under the moonlight, casting an ethereal, crimson hue. The walls or trees of the lair may be covered in moth-shaped markings, made either from blood or some arcane ritual, serving as a mark of the Vampire Butterfly's dominion.
The ground is littered with half-dried petals, crushed bones, and forgotten relics from victims who have wandered too close. The faint hum of soft wings fills the air constantly, an ominous reminder that the Butterfly is never far. As adventurers venture deeper, they may feel their eyes drawn to the flickering of strange lights—glowing cocoon-like pods hanging from trees or set in the ruins. These pods pulsate gently with an unsettling, rhythmic beat, a sign that the Vampire Butterfly is near, watching, waiting.
In the center of the lair, often amidst a ruined temple or within a hollowed-out tree, lies a darkened sanctuary where the Vampire Butterfly rests. This area is bathed in perpetual twilight, where the moonlight barely filters through the thick canopy above. It is here that the creature lays its traps for prey—using its Blood Mist to disorient and confuse those who wander too far into its domain. Shadows stretch unnaturally in the vicinity, hiding dangers that seem to shift with the passage of time. Creatures who venture too close may find themselves losing their sense of direction, trapped in a maze-like labyrinth of endless shadows and thick webs.
The lair of the Vampire Butterfly is not just a physical space; it is a manifestation of its parasitic nature, where beauty and death are intertwined, and nothing is ever quite what it seems.
Lair Actions
If the Vampire Butterfly is encountered in its lair, it can take lair actions. On initiative count 20 (losing initiative ties), it can take one of the following actions:
- Blood Mist. The Vampire Butterfly exhales a cloud of blood-like mist in a 10-foot radius centered on itself. Creatures in the area must make a DC 14 Constitution saving throw or take 7 (2d6) necrotic damage and be blinded until the end of the Vampire Butterfly's next turn. On a successful save, they take half damage and are not blinded.
- Flutter of Shadows. The Butterfly's wings emit an aura of darkness that fills a 15-foot radius around it. The area becomes heavily obscured until the start of the Vampire Butterfly's next turn.
