Coven of One. Baba Shago counts as a coven for the purpose of her spellcasting and abilities that require a coven. The shrunken heads of her sisters, constantly whispering and offering dark counsel, serve as the other members of this macabre coven.
Magic Resistance. Baba Shago has advantage on saving throws against spells and other magical effects.
Magic Items. Baba Shago has Dreamcatcher Staff and Soul Bag
Innate Spellcasting. Baba Shago's innate spellcasting ability is Charisma (spell save DC 19, +11 to hit with spell attacks). She can innately cast the following spells, requiring no material components:
- At will: detect magic, disguise self, invisibility (self only), minor illusion
- 3/day each: bestow curse, counterspell, hold monster, lightning bolt, phantasmal killer
- 1/day each: plane shift, power word pain, finger of death
- Coven Spells (3/day each): fly, magic missile, ray of enfeeblement
Multiattack. Baba Shago makes two attacks with her claws.
Claw: +9 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 2d6 + 4 slashing damage plus 4 (1d8) necrotic damage.
(Soul Bag) Consume Soul (1/Day): As an action, Baba Shago can reach into the Soul Bag and consume one soul trapped within. She regains 4d10 hit points, and the consumed soul is utterly destroyed, unable to be resurrected by any means short of a wish spell.
(Dreamcatcher Staff) Ethereal Echoes (3/Day): As an action, Baba Shago can slam the Dreamcatcher Staff on the ground, creating a wave of ethereal energy. Each creature within a 15-foot cone originating from her must make a DC 19 Wisdom saving throw or take 3d6 psychic damage and be pushed 10 feet away from Baba Shago. On a successful save, a creature takes half as much damage and isn't pushed.
Nightmare Haunting (1/Day). While on the Ethereal Plane, Baba Shago magically touches a sleeping humanoid on the Material Plane. A protection from evil and good spell cast on the target prevents this contact, as does a magic circle. As long as the contact persists, the target has dreadful nightmares. If the target dies as a result of these nightmares, the target's soul is trapped in Baba Shago's Soul Bag.
(Dreamcatcher Staff) Nightmare Whispers: While holding the Dreamcatcher Staff, Baba Shago can use a bonus action to whisper a single word of dread to one creature she can see within 30 feet. The target must succeed on a DC 19 Wisdom saving throw or have disadvantage on the next attack roll, ability check, or saving throw it makes before the end of its next turn.
(Soul Bag) Soul Tether: As a bonus action, Baba Shago can target one creature within 30 feet of her that is frightened. The target must make a DC 19 Wisdom saving throw. On a failed save, the target is magically tethered to the Soul Bag. While tethered, the target has disadvantage on attack rolls and saving throws, and Baba Shago has advantage on attack rolls against the target. The tether lasts for 1 minute or until Baba Shago is incapacitated.
Spell Reflection. When Baba Shago is targeted by a spell, she can use her reaction to attempt to reflect it back at the caster. The caster must make a DC 19 Intelligence saving throw. On a failed save, the spell has no effect on Baba Shago and instead targets the caster, using the spell's original target if it has one.
Baba Shago can take 3 legendary actions, choosing from the options below. Only one legendary action option can be used at a time and only at the end of another creature’s turn. Baba Shago regains spent legendary actions at the start of her turn.
Cackle (1 Action): Baba Shago lets out a chilling cackle. Each creature within 30 feet of her that can hear her must succeed on a DC 19 Wisdom saving throw or be frightened until the end of their next turn.
Ethereal Jaunt (2 Actions): Baba Shago magically enters the Ethereal Plane from the Material Plane, or vice versa.
Soul Drain (3 Actions): Baba Shago targets one creature she can see within 30 feet of her. The target must make a DC 19 Constitution saving throw, taking 4d10 necrotic damage on a failed save, or half as much damage on a successful one. If this damage reduces the target to 0 hit points, their soul is trapped in Baba Shago's soul bag.
Description
Baba Shago is a gaunt and unsettling figure, her frame thin and wiry beneath tattered garments of dark, faded cloth. Her skin is a dark ashen color, stretched taut over sharp bones, resembling aged parchment, and is a sickly yellow-grey hue. Deep wrinkles etch her face, forming a perpetual grimace that accentuates her high cheekbones and pointed chin. Her hair, long and tangled, is the color of midnight, streaked with strands of grey that seem to writhe and shift like shadows. Her eyes, however, are the most striking feature – burning with a cold, malevolent light that seems to pierce through the very soul.
Adorning her tattered clothing are various macabre trinkets: small bones tied with sinew, dried herbs and flowers that emit a faint, sickly sweet odor, and feathers from dark birds. Around her waist, she wears a belt from which hang the shrunken heads of her two sisters. These heads, though reduced in size, retain disturbingly lifelike features, their eyes open and staring blankly ahead, their lips perpetually pursed as if whispering secrets only they can hear. A faint, constant murmur emanates from them, a disturbing chorus of hushed voices that only Baba Shago seems to fully comprehend.
In one hand, she clutches a gnarled staff of dark, almost black wood. At its top is a nightmarish dreamcatcher woven from thick strands of spider silk, interwoven with bone fragments and strands of coarse black hair. Small, unsettling trinkets – teeth, claws, and fragments of bone – hang from the dreamcatcher, clattering softly together and whispering faintly in the wind, creating a constant, low drone. This is Baba Shago's Dreamcatcher Staff, a conduit for her dark magic.
On her other hip hangs a gruesome bag crafted from stretched humanoid skin, stitched together with coarse black hair. The skin is mottled and scarred, and the bag bulges ominously. From within emanate muffled whispers and cries of anguish, the trapped souls of those who have fallen victim to her dark magic. This is Baba Shago's Soul Bag, a repository of stolen life force and a source of her terrible power.
