Actions

Talons. Melee Attack Roll: +5, reach 5 ft. Hit: 2 (1d4) Slashing damage.

Dragon's Breath (Recharge 5-6). The Dragon Bird exhales an elemental blast in a 30-foot cone. Each creature in that area must make a DC 11 Dexterity saving throw, taking 9 (2d8) damage on a failed save, or half as much damage on a successful one. The damage is the Dragon's Bird choice of Acid, Cold, Fire, Lightning, or Thunder damage.

Bonus Actions

Swift Disengage. The Dragon Bird can take the Disengage action as a Bonus Action.

Reactions

Absorb Elements (Recharge 5-6). When the Dragon Bird receives Acid, Cold, Fire, Lightning, or Thunder damage it can use this reaction to gain resistance to that damage, lessening the damage it takes, and retains this resistance until the end of its next turn.

Description

The Dragon Bird is a mysterious bird found in forests and mountain regions. It typically has feathers that are coloured and patterned to blend in to its natural habitat. It has long barred wings, a barred tail and long ear-tufts which are often recumbent. It has a white throat band but has no white on its wings or on its tail. It can range from 12 to 16 inches in length and its weight can vary from 130 to 150 g. It typically hides its nests on the ground amidst rocks, leaves and sticks. They are nocturnal, being active at night, and typically hunt small rodents and similar small animals.

The origin of the Dragon Bird is unclear. Although seeming like an ordinary bird it somehow possesses a hint of draconic magic. It is unknown if this magic is natural or a result of experimentation.
