Description
Habitat/Society
Vampyres live in packs, typically consisting of 3 to 12 individuals, with both males and females, and occasionally a handful of young. They prefer urban environments where they can blend in with the population, stalking their victims within the shadows of city streets, taverns, and the seedy corners of society. Their lairs are often hidden in plain sight, with many Vampyres infiltrating communities by taking on jobs and participating in social gatherings while concealing their true nature.
The Vampyre packs engage in frequent bloody feasts when they encounter other packs, driven by their brutal and chaotic nature. These bloodthirsty events are highly ritualistic, involving mate selection, combat, and horrific slaughter. New Vampyres are born within six months from the union of pack members, their birth a highly anticipated and often violent occasion. The young remain helpless for the first five years of their lives, requiring the protection of the older members of the pack. By the time they reach ten years of age, they are fully grown and must undergo a rite of passage to prove their strength and ferocity—usually by making an unassisted kill.
Ecology
Vampyres, unlike their undead cousins, are living creatures. However, they share the same predatory nature, feeding off the blood of the living. They are ruthless hunters, filling the ecological niche of apex predators, stalking their prey through urban environments. They see their prey as little more than cattle, with no regard for the lives they destroy.
Though they are not bound by the weaknesses of traditional vampires, such as the need to rest in a coffin or fear of sunlight, their hunger is just as insatiable. Without fresh blood, Vampyres become weak, and if they go too long without feeding, they will weaken and may fall into a feral state, becoming even more dangerous. They are solitary by nature but often hunt in packs to overwhelm stronger prey. Vampyres will rarely show mercy to their victims, often enjoying the torment and suffering of their bloodletting before they strike the final blow.
In recent years, some Vampyres have adopted a more sophisticated lifestyle, operating covertly among human communities. They have been known to hold jobs, live in large estates, and even become influential members of high society—all while feeding off the unsuspecting masses at night.
