Energy Drain. When a creature starts its turn within 10 feet of a vampire moss, it must make a DC 12 Constitution saving throw. On a failed save, the creature takes 1 necrotic damage as the moss draws its life energy. This damage cannot be reduced or avoided by resistance or immunity. If this damage reduces a creature to 0 hit points, it dies and the moss becomes sated.

Sated State. A vampire moss becomes bright emerald green when it has drained 16 hit points worth of life energy. While sated, the moss ceases draining energy until 24 hours have passed or it is attacked.

Regeneration. The moss regains 2 hit points per week, provided it has absorbed life energy at some point within the last month.

Sustenance Draw. If no creatures are within its range, the moss can feed on nearby plants or trees. A single feeding reduces the moss’s host to withered husks over the course of a week.

Actions

Feeding Latch (Recharge 5–6). When a creature fails its Constitution saving throw against Energy Drain, the vampire moss establishes a direct magical connection to the creature. While latched, the moss drains 2 hit points per round instead of 1. The latch ends if the creature leaves the moss’s range, the moss takes radiant or fire damage, or the creature receives magical healing.

Description

Vampire moss thrives in shadowy, damp environments, such as swamps and deep forests. It prefers to feed on mammals, particularly intelligent creatures, but it will draw energy from any living thing in desperation. Sages speculate that the moss might have been created through magical experiments gone awry.

The bright emerald hue of a fully sated vampire moss makes it a sought-after alchemical ingredient, particularly for crafting cursed items like Potions of Poison or Rings of Weakness. However, harvesting the moss is perilous due to its predatory nature.
