Legendary Resistance (2/Day). If Va’kaliss fails a saving throw, they can choose to succeed instead.
Phase 2: Voice of the Abyss
At the start of each round, all creatures within 30 feet must roll 1d6:
- 1-2: Gravity shifts – Everyone's speed is halved.
- 3-4: Spatial warping – The battlefield shifts, swapping two random combatants' positions.
- 5-6: Echoes of Fate – A random past action is repeated, causing confusion.
Phase 2: Descent into the Otherworld (At 50% HP)
- The Lantern of the Midday Moon pulses wildly, and the ritual completes, merging the chamber with the Otherworld.
- The battlefield becomes unstable, causing each round to warp and shift unpredictably.
- Gravity becomes unreliable, with sections of the battlefield fluctuating wildly.
- Va’kaliss is no longer entirely bound to reality, gaining an extra Legendary Action per turn.
Final Phase: As Va’kaliss nears death, the entire chamber fractures, and the party is dragged into the Otherworld, lost within the depths of the Niche Void.
Multiattack.
Va’kaliss makes three attacks: one with Void Maw, one with Devouring Echo, and one with Hymn of the Abyss.
Void Maw. Melee Spell Attack: +11 to hit, reach 10 ft., one target.
- Hit: 21 (3d8 + 7) psychic damage.
- If the target fails a DC 17 Strength saving throw, they are restrained by writhing void tendrils until the end of Va’kaliss’s next turn.
Devouring Echo. Ranged Spell Attack: +11 to hit, range 60 ft., one target.
- Hit: 19 (3d6 + 7) thunder damage.
- If the target fails a DC 17 Constitution saving throw, they suffer disadvantage on attack rolls and saving throws for 1 round, as they hear echoes of themselves being devoured across multiple realities.
Hymn of the Abyss (Recharge 5–6).
Va’kaliss sings a verse of Horoth’s Song, forcing all creatures within 30 feet to make a DC 17 Wisdom saving throw.
- On a failure, they take 27 (6d8) psychic damage and are stunned until the end of their next turn.
- On a success, they take half damage and are not stunned.
Eldritch Melodies (1/Turn, Recharge on Short Rest)
Va’kaliss can call upon one of their College of the Apocalypse melodies each turn, using their Bardic Inspiration (d12) to fuel them.
Euphony of Self-Destruction.
Choose one creature within 60 feet. It must make a DC 17 Charisma saving throw or be dragged through the void.
- At the end of Va’kaliss’s next turn, the creature reappears, taking 5d12 psychic damage and must make a DC 17 Wisdom saving throw or gain a long-term madness effect.
Ode to Subjugation.
Va’kaliss summons a mass of writhing tendrils that lash out at all creatures within 30 feet.
- Targets must make a DC 17 Dexterity saving throw, becoming restrained for 1 minute on a failure.
- Restrained creatures take 3d6 necrotic damage at the start of their turns.
Ballad of the Nameless City.
Va’kaliss unleashes a wave of inverted gravity, forcing all creatures within 30 feet to make a DC 17 Strength saving throw.
- On a failure, they are thrown 20 feet in a direction of Va’kaliss’s choice and are knocked prone.
Unstable Form. Va’kaliss’s body constantly shifts between realspace and the void. As a reaction to taking damage, they can phase into the void, reducing the damage taken by half and teleporting up to 30 feet to an unoccupied space.
Legendary Actions (2/Turn)
Va’kaliss can take 3 legendary actions, choosing from the options below. Only one action can be used at a time, and only at the end of another creature’s turn.
Resonant Pulse.
Va’kaliss releases a pulse of void energy in a 10-foot radius.
- Creatures in range take 2d10 force damage and are pushed 5 feet away.
Fractured Reality.
Va’kaliss targets one creature within 30 feet.
- They must make a DC 17 Intelligence saving throw or experience disjointed time, missing their next reaction.
Shattering Note (Costs 2 Actions).
Va’kaliss emits a burst of discordant sound at one creature within 60 feet.
- They take 4d6 thunder damage and must succeed on a DC 17 Constitution saving throw or be stunned until the end of their next turn.
Description
Tall and impossibly thin, their form draped in flowing black and red robes, which seem to flutter as if underwater. Their face is a mask of polished voidstone, featureless except for a single spiraling eye, which constantly shifts in size. Their voice is not their own, but a chorus of whispers that do not match the movements of their lips. Every word spoken by Va’kaliss makes the room feel smaller, as if the walls are pressing inward.
Lair and Lair Actions

While in the Heart of Shadar, Va’kaliss can use one of the following effects at the start of initiative 20 (losing ties).

- All creatures must make a DC 17 Dexterity saving throw or be shunted 10 feet in a random direction.
The Song of Horoth.
A deep, incomprehensible hum echoes in the chamber.
- All creatures within 30 feet of the Lantern must make a DC 17 Wisdom saving throw or become frightened for 1 minute.
The Abyss Hungers.

- They must succeed on a DC 17 Strength saving throw or be restrained as void tendrils pull them toward the abyss.
