Legendary Resistance (4/Day, or 5/Day in Lair). If the dragon fails a saving throw, it can choose to succeed instead.
Multiattack. The dragon makes three Rend attacks. It can replace one attack with a use of Spellcasting to cast Scorching Ray (level 3 version).
Rend. Melee Attack Roll: +17, reach 15 ft. Hit: 19 (2d8 + 10) Slashing damage plus 10 (3d6) Fire damage.
Fire Breath (Recharge 5–6). Dexterity Saving Throw: DC 24, each creature in a 90-foot Cone. Failure: 91 (26d6) Fire damage. Success: Half damage.
Spellcasting. The dragon casts one of the following spells, requiring no Material components and using Charisma as the spellcasting ability (spell save DC 23, +15 to hit with spell attacks):
At Will: Command (level 2 version), Detect Magic, Scorching Ray (level 3 version)
1/Day Each: Fireball (level 6 version), Scrying
Legendary Action Uses: 3 (4 in Lair). Immediately after another creature’s turn, the dragon can expend a use to take one of the following actions. The dragon regains all expended uses at the start of each of its turns.
Commanding Presence. The dragon uses Spellcasting to cast Command (level 2 version). The dragon can’t take this action again until the start of its next turn.
Fiery Rays. The dragon uses Spellcasting to cast Scorching Ray (level 3 version). The dragon can’t take this action again until the start of its next turn.
Pounce. The dragon moves up to half its Speed, and it makes one Rend attack.

Posted Jul 6, 2026I think this upgraded version would be a fair challenge, esp for a 3 man party, after a long dungeon crawl. If added maybe some high end enemy wizards to the mix, this would be a good scrap, for exhausted level 20 adventurers. Maybe not a campaign-ender type boss, but a highly satisfactory one!(Unless your party can take a beating, then add a lich or two!)
Or some more dragons, for a dragon lair theme

Posted Jul 19, 2026I really want to know why they removed the Frightful Presence of the previous version... I think they believe that command at level 2 is a good substitute, but it's not the same at all.
Almost two years after this change, I see that nobody talks about it; I imagine that almost nobody used it.

Posted Sep 22, 2026An ancient red dragon uses up slightly less than the hard encounter budget for 3 level 20s.
Edit: A single level 20 PC's hard difficulty encounter budget is 22,000 xp.

Posted Sep 22, 2026This is good, but I have a few suggestions. Level 6 Fireball is less than half the strength of the ancient red dragon's fire breath, and using it takes an entire action, so I suggest scrapping it. Incendiary Cloud or Meteor Swarm could be cool additions, so maybe consider adding those to make it stronger. I'd suggest only having one or two of these level 8 and 9 spells, though, just to keep it balanced.

Posted Sep 22, 2026These high-CR creatures are supposed to be rare and it's not like you'll fight a lot of these. I think that to make a boss more interesting, you should absolutely think about customizing it, but think about its final CR to make sure your party can handle it. Also, a creature with a CR equal to the party's average level is supposed to be an easy encounter.
